UFC Fight Night: Moreno vs. Albazi Recap and Reaction

UFC Fight Night: Moreno vs. Albazi  took place tonight from Edmonton, Alberta Canada.  The hometown of WWE legend Chris Benoit.

It was a fun card on ESPN+ that saw a decent enough prelim but began to heat up on the main card. Let’s take a look at that main card with what stuck out the most, and our reactions to it.

Mike Malott defeated Trevin Giles by UD with scored of 30-27, 29-28, 29-28

Reaction – Not the greatest fight, but Malott did enough to get the win despite not landing the finish.  A nice win for the hometown boy to start the main portion of the show. It moves Malotts UFC record to 5-1 and drops Giles to 6-7 who is now on the verge of being cut.

Dustin Stoltzfus knocks out Marc-Andre Barriault at 4:28 of the first round.

Reaction He dropped the Canadian seconds into the fight and almost ended super quickly.  He spent the rest of the round working on him until putting him away with 32 seconds to spare in the opening round.  He ended up putting him away for good while both were on their feet and Stoltzfus landed a stunning knockout with a left to jaw in the midst of a wild exchange.

Jasmine Jasudavicious submits Ariane da Silva by Brabo Choke at 3:28 of the third round.

Reaction – Another fight starring a Canadian as the Maple Lea Warrior was Vicious!  She worked towards the choke all fight and finally landed it deep into the third.  This win propels her record to 12-3 and is her 3 straight overall in the flyweight division.

Brendson Riberio defeats Caion Machado by Split Decision

Reaction – An extremely boring first round as both fighters were overly cautious and nothing at all happened. The second round picked up a bit, but not enough to be entertaining as it was clear, neither man was willing to push the action. The third round was actually less then the first two, leading to a split decision as neither man did enough to win clearly.

Erin Blanchfield defeats Rose Namajunas 29-28 across the board.

A dull first round with little to no action.  Round two saw Thug Rose defend a takedown attempt on the fence- but not much else other then that. With the fight still up for grabs in the third round, Erin Blanchfield landed her first takedown of the fight, then did nothing with it.  It was enough to win the round, but not much else.

A slow fourth round of little to no action led to the boo birds coming out in full force.  It appeared to be tied 2-2 after 4 rounds.  Erin Blanchfield started off the fifth round with a shoot takedown.  Blanchfield spent the majority of the remaining portion of the round in charge on the ground as Thug Rose had few if any answers.  Nothing else happened and we went to the cards. Terrible fight!

Brandon Moreno defeats Amir Albazi by UD

The former champ Moreno looked good tonight as he piled up the points for five straight rounds to put away the red hot Albazi in tactical fashion.  This win returns him to Flyweight Title Contention.
