On Championship Saturday only two teams remained in the MAC. The Toledo Rockets (7-5) and the Ohio Bobcats (9-3) face off for the top of the MAC at Ford Field. The Toledo Rockets beat the Ohio Bobcats in a defensive showdown 17-7. “We started this journey in January…it’s easier said than done.” Said coach Jason Candle.

The Rockets received the ball first and made good on their first try to take the lead. Dequan Finn and Jacquez Stuart led a fast and deadly rushing attack that kept the Bobcats front seven on their heels. Staurt launched himself 29 yards, bending and breaking Ohio defenders on his way to give the Rockets the lead for their first points on their first possession of the game. “It’s a confidence boost… that was the start we were looking for.” Said Nick Rosi on starting out with a touchdown.

Ohio failed to get a drive going as they continued to stall out the entirety of the first quarter. Toledo started to struggle after their first touchdown drive, this was credited to both defenses playing a tough run defense.

Ohio finally got in the red zone thanks to a 32-yard pass from Harris that connected with Will Kackmarek that put the Bobcats right on the doormat of the Toledo endzone. Three plays later Bangura scratched and clawed his way to the endzone to tie the ball game up at seven in the second quarter.

Both teams’ defenses kept the standard of tough play as both offenses struggled to stay on the field. Toledo struggled its way down the field at the end of the half to get Thomas Cluckey a 44-yard field goal attempt that split the uprights. This 44-yard field goal gave Toledo a three-point lead heading into the locker rooms at halftime.

The second half remained a defensive battle for the third quarter. Toledo got the ball to the Ohio goal line. The Rockets tried for a touchdown on fourth and goal but failed as Finn slipped in the backfield trying to gain time for his wide receivers.

Ohio started to drive down to Toledo’s side of the field but stalled out where it counted, As the third quarter ended Toledo continued its methodical drive down the field as the Bobcats did whatever they could to contain Finn.

Finn was finally able to have his championship moment when he found Blankumsee in the endzone to extend the Rocket lead to 10. “It’s surreal” Dequan Finn on what it was like playing in his hometown.

The offense handed the keys off to the defense as CJ Harris and the Bobcats attempted to mount a late fourth quarter comeback. This comeback attempt ended after the Rockets stopped Ohio twice to achieve their second MAC Championship of the Jason Candle era in Toledo. The Rockets end with a 8-5 record while Ohio falls to 9-4, both teams will find out tomorrow what bowl they will be in.
