Berea, OH – The Berea-Midpark Titans used a strong second half surge to overcome a second quarter deficit and capture a 40-29 victory over the Avon Lake Shoregals.
The Titans were led by sharp shooting Kendall Braaten who had a game high 20 points on the contest. Braaten sunk 2 from beyond the arc and 8 from the charity stripe. Kierney Murphy continued to perfect her stroke from long range as she finished with 10 points and 9 of them from beyond the arc.
The Shoregals were paced by Leah Hicov with 9 points as Jane Ritt had 7 while Claire Springer had 6. Courtney Borland, Brynn Bondar and Izzie Polinko all found the score sheet as well.
The Lady Titans ran out to an 8-2 lead 3 minutes into the game as Braaten buried a three ball and two foul shots to go with a Kierney Murphy three ball. They went cold the rest of the quarter however as the Shoregals climbed back in it to only trail 8-7 after one.
A Springer foul shot early into the second squared things up at 8 each with 6:39 to play. A Leah Hicov three ball then made it 11-8 Shoregals, and it was a 9-0 run for Avon Lake. Moments later a Leah Hicov layup made it 13-8 Shoregals as the run hit double digits. The next time down the court, it was a Leah Ritt three ball making it 16-8 and extending the run to 14 straight points to double up the Titans.
Kendall Braaten foul shots at the 4:11 mark of the second would finally halt the Shoregals run. A Lauren Yee run out followed by a Kendall Braaten three ball, then cut the lead to 16-15. Courtney Simon then give the Titans the lead back with a three ball from the corner. The Titans had answered the Shoregals run of 14-0 with a 10-0 run of their own. A Springer put back tied it up at 18 as we headed to the half.
Leah Hicov drained another three pointer to start the second half for the Shoregals and reclaimed the lead at 21-18. From there made baskets by Braaten and Murphy reclaimed the lead for the Titans at 23-21. In a game that had several lead changes, the Titans would never trail again. The Titans would close out the quarter with a 30-25 lead as Braaten finished with 8 points in the quarter.
The Titans put things away for good as they held the Shoregals to 4 points in a 10-4 quarter that saw them lock up the victory at 40-29.
