This Week in NXT (4-24-19)

On NXT this week, we have a great set of matches. First, we have The Viking Raiders vs. The Street Profits. And, in the main event, we have NXT Champion Johnny Gargano vs. Roderick Strong.

Jaxon Riker vs. Humberto Carrillo

Highlights:

  • Humberto cannot get more than a 1 Count on Riker.
  • Humberto lands on his head in the corner.
  • Riker hits his finisher but starts to beat up Humberto outside of the ring.

Finish:

  • Riker continues beating up Humberto Carrillo on the outside, causing a double count-out. After the match, Oney Lorcan and Danny Burch save Carrillo from a beat down.

Winner: No Winner, Double Count-Out

After the match, Adam Cole has an interview about Gargano vs. Strong tonight. Adam says that Gargano is scared of him, but Strong will beat him. Matt Riddle comes in and says Cole is jealous, and Cole storms out.

After this we see a video hyping the WWE Performance Center

Vanessa Borne and Aliyah vs. Candice LaRae and Kacy Catanzaro

Highlights:

  • Very unique offense from Kacy, doing a handstand on the top rope.
  • Borne and Aliyah are a really good team together, much to my surprise.
  • Candice LaRae gets the hot tag, taking out Borne and Aliyah.

Finish:

  • LaRae hits Borne with a Lionsault for the win.

Winner: Candice LaRae and Kacy Catanzaro

We get an interview with Io Shirai. Io is attacked before saying much by Marina Shafir and Jessamyn Duke.

We then have a video package hyping Kushida. William Regal was in an interview about Kushida, but he is interrupted by Kassius Ohno. Kassius wants a match against Kushida next week, and Regal gives it to them.

The Street Profits vs. The Viking Raiders

Highlights:

  • The Viking Raiders are still being called their original names here.
  • The Street Profits attack The Raiders to start the match.
  • The match starts fast paced, with Montez Ford looking like a star in the opening moments.
  • The Raiders slow the pace down, with Hanson beginning to dominate.
  • Ford and Hanson battle back and forth, with Ford getting the better hand.
  • Nigel McGuinness says that there is a sense of urgency with The Street Profits, and he is right.
  • That handspring elbow that Hanson does is a thing of beauty.

Finish:

  • The Viking Raiders win with Thor’s Hammer onto Montez Ford.

Winners: The Viking Raiders

We see a Mia Yim press interview, asking her about Shayna Baszler. She says she deserves another chance against her.

NXT Champion Johnny Gargano vs. Roderick Strong

Highlights:

  • There is a really good chain wrestling exchange to start the match.
  • Roderick Strong hit a suplex to Gargano on the side of the apron.
  • Strong has some really loud chops.
  • Strong is sent shoulder first into the steel steps.
  • Johnny hits a cannonball onto the outside on Strong.
  • Gargano hits one heck of a Superkick.
  • Strong has some of the most innovative Back Breakers I have ever seen.
  • Gargano reverses a Boston Crab into the Gargano Escape.
  • Adam Cole comes out with the Undisputed Era. Matt Riddle follows and starts a brawl

Finish:

  • Adam Cole accidentally hits Strong with a kick, allowing Johnny to hit a Slingshot DDT for the win! Cole and Strong argue after the match, wit Strong going to the back

Winner: Johnny Gargano

Overview

Best Match: Gargano vs. Strong, The Viking Raiders vs. The Street Profits

Worst Match: Riker vs. Carrillo

Summary: Solid show from top to bottom, setting up some great things for the next Takeover show. I am also very excited to see Kushida’s debut next week.
