The St. Ignatius Wildcats Bite the Euclid Panthers in a 44 to 14 Victory!

Euclid vs St. Ignatius

1st quarter

This game started off with the Euclid Panthers receiving the ball on their own 20-yard line for the opening game drive, unfortunately the Panthers could not muster anything other than 2 yards and was forced to go 3 and out. St. Ignatius started their initial drive on their own 48yard line.

After a few successful passes and runs to get the game’s first 1st down, a 10-yard quarterback sack forced them to punt the ball back to the Panthers; fortunately for the Wildcats they were able to pin the punt to the Panther’s 1yard line. After two plays by Euclid, that only resulted in 1 yard, head coach Rick Lytle surprised everyone with a pass play that garnered a 99-yard touchdown from quarterback Deonte Rucker to wideout Jakobi Laster for the games first score.

Euclid 7, St. Ignatius 0. With renewed energy, courtesy of the Euclid offense, the Panther’s defense bent but didn’t break on a few successful runs by the Wildcats and ultimately forced them to punt the ball. On the first play of their next drive, Euclid’s quarterback Rucker completed a 3-yard pass at the Panther’s 25-yard line, but the ball was fumbled by the wideout and recovered by the Wildcats at the Euclid 26-yard line. St. Ignatius, starting with awesome field position, used about 4 plays to punch it into the endzone on a 4-yard run by tailback Marty Lenehan to even the score. Euclid 7, St. Ignatius 7.

2nd quarter

Euclid ended the 1st quarter with a 47-yard pass play to start the 2nd quarter in Panther’s territory, but unlike their previous drive they could not capitalize with a big play and had to punt the ball back to the Wildcats. St. Ignatius looking to take the lead, started their drive on their own 13yard line, and with the help of a defensive pass interference call, was able to move the ball into the Panther’s side of the field.

With 5:28 left in the half the Wildcats in fact were able to jump ahead on a 4th  and 1 run play by Marty Lenehan, which resulted in a 35-yard score. St. Ignatius 14, Euclid 7. The Panthers not wanting to let the score get away from them, started their next drive at their own 20yard line.

After converting a first down in 3 plays, Euclid could not convert a second one and then lost the ball to St. Ignatius on a fumbled punt attempt at the Panther’s 24yard line. Using this great fortune, the Wildcats were able to score another touchdown on a 20-yard pass from quarterback Joey Pfaff to wideout Patrick Tompkins.

St. Ignatius 21, Euclid 7. With 2:35 left in the second quarter and after Euclid once again fumbled the ball on the kick return, St. Ignatius was able to score again with another Pfaff to Tompkins connection, this time for 24-yards. St. Ignatius 28, Euclid 7. Euclid tried to muster up a successful drive before the end of the half, but the clock was not in their favor, and they could only move from the 20yard line to the Wildcats 47yard line before the time ran out on the half. St. Ignatius 28, Euclid 7.

3rd quarter

St. Ignatius started the second half with ball on their 39yard line, but they went 3 and out before punting the ball to Euclid, who took over on their own 28yard line. The Panthers followed suit and went 3 and out on their first drive too; before punting it back to St. Ignatius at the 8:45 mark.

After back-and-forth stalled drives and a Wildcat’s thrown interception, the first sign of life at the 7:50 mark was a blocked punt by St. Ignatius, that was recovered at the Panther’s 25yard line. The Wildcats were able to score with a third Pfaff to Thompkins touchdown connection for 25yards. St. Ignatius 35, Euclid 7. Euclid, starting to feel a little defeated, lost yards on three straight plays and then fumbled to punt attempt into the back of their endzone for a 2-point safety. St. Ignatius 37, Euclid 7 (30pt running clock now in effect).

At the 4:55 mark (running clock) and a very short field, after the Euclid kickoff, the Wildcats were able to score once again on a 35-yard run by Joey Georges to extend their lead to 37 points. St. Ignatius 44, Euclid 7. On their next drive, Euclid was gifted a pass interference call on 4th and 3, which extended their drive into the 4th quarter on their own 42-yard line.

4th quarter

The Panthers started the last quarter of the game with an intentional grounding penalty, which put them at 4thand 20, before turning the ball over on downs. St. Ignatius starting their first drive of the final quarter on the Panther’s 32-yard line, with their backups in the game, were unable to benefit from the very short field and at the 6:30 mark (running clock), turned the ball over on downs at the Euclid 14yard line. Euclid, with a running clock, used a few wideout screen passes to move up the field into Wildcat’s territory before St. Ignatius committed a pass interference penalty that helped the Panthers get closer to the endzone. Euclid, not giving up and 1:41 (running clock) left in the game, scored the game’s final touchdown on a 3-yard run by Leroy Billips. St. Ignatius 44, Euclid 14. St. Ignatius received the kickoff with 1:02 (running clock) left and went directly into victory formation to end the game.
