The potential of Chet Holmgren and his play in Summer League

The time that everyone loves to see after the NBA draft is the NBA summer league.  The NBA summer league is where the new draft picks and young unsigned players go to showcase their talents in hopes to sign a deal with a team. It’s also a great way to see what the new upcoming rookies look like as they play at the next level in the NBA.

The player that stands out the most right now, in my opinion, is the number two pick in the draft, Chet Holmgren.  Chet has had a lot of buzz in notoriety since high school, going into college as being arguably the best player in his class and in this year’s past draft of 2022.

Chet Holmgren was projected to be the number one pick in this year’s draft out of Gonzaga, and he was drafted number two to the Oklahoma City Thunder.  Being one of the highest picks in the draft comes with a lot of pressure and expectations to do well and play great, especially coming into a situation where you are a part of a rebuilding franchise, trying to get back to a winning basketball culture. That being said, Chet may very well be a cornerstone in the rebuilding process for the Oklahoma City Thunder.

He has the potential and star power that the Thunder may need, and they are hoping that he plays the way that they know he can.  Well, I can certainly say, that he is playing amazing right now, as Chet dropped an incredible 23 points, 7 rebounds, and a record setting 6 blocks, while also shooting 4 of 6 from the three-point range in his summer league debut which also, resulted in a win over the Utah Jazz.  When Chet heard that he set the summer league record and blocks he said, “I’m coming to break it again”.

Chet is a 7′ 1″ center, who is a 3-level scorer, showing his defense and shooting ability.  Chet was also able to put up a double, double in his second game, with 11 points, 12 rebounds, and 2 blocks, which also came with a win over the Memphis Grizzlies.  Chet is definitely going to be one of the rookies to look out for as he tries to help the Oklahoma City Thunder win some games this season, and potentially make a push for the playoffs with his versatility, scoring in his defensive presence in the paint as a shot blocker as he averaged 3.7 blocks a game in college. Chet can definitely protect the rim.

The Oklahoma City Thunder have a real chance to be a threat in a few years adding Chet Holmgren to the team.  He looks like he has star potential.  All we have to do is wait and see what kind of player he becomes as his rookie year starts, because the sky’s the limit with the Thunder’s young rookie.
