The OBJ Problem: Who’s Fault Is It?

Baker Mayfield came to camp out of shape and has been throwing people under the bus all season long. Even with that, I still don’t blame him. A good portion of his interceptions this season have been tipped balls or bad routes. Now, that’s not to say his play hasn’t been poor, I just don’t believe it is all his fault.

The play calling and line play has been horrendous. Higgins was hurt and has been in the doghouse ever since. David Njoku has also been hurt. Callaway was suspended and then lost in the soup when he returned before getting cut. He basically has had no name tight ends, and Jarvis Landry to throw the ball too as OBJ is almost always double covered.

A healthy Njoku and a coach who used Higgins properly, and this season is much different right now.

Baker needs to be better, much better, but this is not his fault. He has targeted OBJ 108 times in 13 games, that is an average of 8 times a game. It needs to be higher, but a lot of things need to be different.

If Baker shuts up, focuses on nothing but football and gets a decent line in front of him, then next year will be much better. Don’t throw the towel in on number 6 just yet.

The problem is clear, and we can address that on Page 4.
