The North Ridgeville Rangers (7-8) stifling defense leads them to a 37-20 win over the Amherst Comets (2-12).

Points were tough to come by early in this one as the Rangers took a 9 point lead into half by the score of 16-7. The Rangers were led in scoring by sophomore guard Brooke Schroeder with 7 points at the half. While Schroeder had a nice scoring half, the entire Rangers defense was the story of this half. Their suffocating double teams and traps led to Steele turning over the ball 15 times in the first half. Schroeder and her counterpart sophomore guard, Lauryn Bohannon, seemed to be in every passing lane, making it incredibly tough for the Amherst guards to work the ball inside.

The trends of the first half continued into the 2nd. The Rangers defense came out strong once again, only allowing 2 3rd quarter points from Amherst. Ridgeville continued to force turnovers and crash the boards in the 2nd half, keeping the ball in their hands for the majority of the half. Scoring also picked up for the rangers in the 2nd half as they finished with 37 points, beating the Steele 37-20 and finishing with 29 forced turnovers.

I had a chance to talk with coach Amy Esser after the game and talk to her about the stellar defensive performance. “Our goal was to create a lot of havoc with the passing lanes and ultimately just cause a lot of pressure. I thought our girls really stepped up to the plate and I was really happy with our effort today”.

Brooke Schroeder finished with 11 points and was a leader on both sides of the ball in this one. I asked coach Esser about her performance. “She was our Ranger of The Game today for her overall performance, as far as offense, defense, controlling the tempo, and controlling the game. I think she’s really coming into her own as a leader on the team and as a point guard. That’s all you can ask for as a coach from your point guard is to control the tempo and the game and I think she did an amazing job of that today”.

The Rangers look to stay hot as they take on Olmstead fall at home and then travel to Avon for their next 2. While Amherst looks to find a win at home against Open Door Christian and then away at Midview in their next 2.

  1. Being a life long comet fan it is refreshing to see coach Z on the sidelines he is the perfect guy to turn this program around. We may have lost today and haven’t won many games it doesn’t matter the wins will come. So we lost 10 straight in a row it doesn’t matter this a rebuild. Coach keep doing what you do we support, you have been a pioneer in the community with our young athletes. Good luck the rest of the season girls and coaches!
