When you’re a promoter and you have 82,000 seats to fill, possibly 90,000, you rely on your ultimate Good Guy vs Bad Guy scenario. For AEW, they have those exact two men on their roster.
First, the villain, the smug, cocky heel that everyone outside of Long Island is just waiting to boo, and see him get his just do. The one man on the roster who can talk trash, and then back every ounce of it up with one evil insult after another. That man, is MJF. It’s not exactly a mystery. His path his clear, running through his 3 other pillars and then on to main event All In at Wembley Stadium to close out the “Summer of MJF”. Oh, rest assured, that is what it will be called too, just to get some more heat on him after the CM Punk failed, “Summer of Punk” tour last year that never got off the ground.
So, the Heel is set, but the Hero, the face, isn’t exactly traditional this time, but rather, the Anti Hero. There is no denying the popularity that has always been there with Adam Cole since his earliest days in NXT, and now, AEW. Heel or face, fans beloved Adam Cole. Match him up with Britt Baker, his real life girlfriend, and the story just gets stronger. You already know that on the microphone, both he and MJF are two of the best, and you also realize that MJF will have a field day with insults when it comes to goading MJF into a fight with attacking the character of Baker.
Mix in the fact that Cole is coming back from a career threatening injury, and the babyface shine is brighter than ever. It doesn’t need to be a homegrown boy like Davey Boy Smith the “British Bulldog” was in 1992 for WWF, it just has to be a good story, and this one is!
