The Holy Name GreenWave are Regional Champs, Beating the Padua Franciscan Bruins 56-21

Maple Heights, OH –

 

On Friday night, the Holy Name GreenWave and the Padua Franciscan Bruins played at Maple Heights Stadium in the Division III Regional Finals of the OHSAA Playoffs. The GreenWave entered the game after a winning a thrilling game against Mansfield Senior Tyger’s, 17-16 last week.

The Bruins entered the game coming off a win against the Norton Panthers, 35-7. The GreenWave came out on top 56-21. The GreenWave were led by senior quarterback Jayvon Williams, senior running back, Austin Wondolowski and senior running back, Kriztion Sanchez.

 

Senior quarterback, Jayvon Williams was unstoppable for the Holy Name GreenWave. His leadership and speed led the offense in their stellar performance. Williams scored 4 of the 8 GreenWave touchdowns. He had a 62-yard rushing touchdown, a 35-yard rushing touchdown and a 54-yard rushing touchdown.

 

Senior running back, Austin Wondolowski was an important part of the GreenWave’s great win. He was unable to be caught by the Bruins’ defense and he made crucial stops on defense to keep the Bruins’ offense at bay. He scored 3 of the GreenWave’s 8 touchdowns. He had a 41-yard rushing touchdown, and two 32-yard rushing touchdowns.

 

Senior running back, Kriztion Sanchez, was another key player in the GreenWave’s big win.  He moved the ball downfield for the GreenWave and set the offense up for success. He had two 31-yard carries and a 14-yard rushing touchdown.

 

The Holy Name GreenWave didn’t miss a beat on their first drive of the game. The GreenWave offense, led by senior quarterback, Jayvon Williams struck first. William’s speed and quick-thinking were key in the GreenWave’s offensive success. Williams carried the ball 7-yards down field to start off the drive. After a costly offsides penalty against the Bruins, the

GreenWave moved closer to the endzone. The duo of Jayvon Williams and senior running back, Austin Wondolowski got the job done for the GreenWave. Williams handed the ball off to Wondolowski who raced downfield and into the endzone for a 41-yard rushing touchdown. Senior kicker, Curtis Robinson II came on and secured the extra point, putting the score at 7-0 with 8:56 left in the 1st quarter.

 

The GreenWave offense kept the momentum rolling on their second drive after blocking the Bruins’ punt to start off their drive. The Bruins defense held the GreenWave at bay for the first couple downs of the drive, forcing the GreenWave to a 3rd down. The GreenWave answered back with the duo of Jayvon Williams and Austin Wondolowski.

Williams handed the ball off the Wondolowski, and he successfully evaded the Bruins’ defense and ran back into the endzone for a 32-yard rushing touchdown. Kicker, Curtis Robinson II came on and secured another extra point, putting the score at 14-0 with 4:47 left in the 1st quarter.

 

The Bruins’ defense could not stop Jayvon Williams and his speed. On the GreenWave’s third drive of the night, Williams was the hero for the GreenWave. Williams started off the drive with an 18-yard carry to give the GreenWave the 1st down. Williams handed the ball off to senior running back, Kriztion Sanchez who weaved through the Bruins’ defense and carried the ball 23-yards, putting the GreenWave into the RedZone.

Williams kept the ball and ran right into the endzone, for a 19-yard rushing touchdown. Curtis Robinson II continued his busy night and came on and scored the extra point for the GreenWave, putting the score at 21-0 with 53 seconds in the 1st quarter.

 

Jayvon Williams continued his impressive night as he scored yet again for the GreenWave. Williams handed the ball off to Kriztion Sanchez who carried the ball for 11-yards to give the GreenWave the 1st down. On the second down of the drive, Jayvon Williams was unstoppable and dashed down the field and right back into the end zone for a remarkable 62-yard rushing touchdown. Kicker, Curtis Robinson II continued his perfect night as he scored the extra point, putting the score at 28-0, with 11:03 left in the half.

 

The GreenWave offense did not back down, and they were able to evade the Bruins’ defense yet again. Kriztion Sanchez started off the drive with a 31-yard carry to move the football down the field for the GreenWave. Jayvon Williams rushed 35-yards into the endzone for another GreenWave touchdown. Curtis Robinson II came on and scored the extra point, putting the score at 35-0 with 8:43 left in the half.

 

The first half did not start off the way that the Bruins wanted it to, but they did not back down. Junior quarterback, Tyler Tusai threw a perfect 88-yard touchdown pass to sophomore wide receiver, Riley Cervenka to put the Bruins on the scoreboard. Senior kicker, Owen Leigh came on and scored the extra point for the Bruins, putting the score at 35-7 with 4:45 left in the half.

 

The Bruins’ offensive started to come alive, and they scored their second touchdown of the night. Tyler Tusai got the job down with a series of accurate passes that moved the ball downfield for the Bruins.

Tusai threw a 13-yard completion to wide receiver, Riley Cervenka to secure the 1st down for the Bruins. Tusai linked with junior wide receiver, Gio DiSiena for a 14-yard completion, to secure another 1st down.

Tusai put the Bruins into the RedZone with a 19-yard completion to junior tight end, Freddie Borkey. Tusai got the job done with a perfect 5-yard pass to Borkey who was open in the end zone, for another Bruins touchdown. Kicker, Owen Leigh came on and scored another extra point for the Bruins, putting the score at 35- 14 with 1:05 left in the half.

 

The GreenWave kept the same energy to begin the second half. After forcing the Bruins to a quick 3-and-out, the GreenWave offense came on and answered back to the Bruins’ touchdowns. Williams handed the ball off to Austin Wondolowski who carried the ball 17-yards downfield.

Jayvon Williams carried the ball 19yards down field to put the GreenWave into the RedZone. Kriztion Sanchez evaded the Bruin defense and ran into the endzone for a 14-yard rushing touchdown. Kicker, Curtis Robinson II came on and continued his perfect night, scoring the extra point, putting the score at 42-14 with 7:09 left in the 3rd quarter.

 

The Bruins continued their fight and answered back to the GreenWave’s touchdown. Quarterback, Tyler Tusai found wide receiver, Riley Cervenka threw a perfect 57-yard completion to put the Bruins into the red zone. Tusai threw another 5-yard touchdown completion to Cervenka to give the Bruins another touchdown. Kicker, Owen Leigh, came on and secured the extra point for the Bruins, putting the score at 42-21 with 6:31 left in the half.

 

Jayvon Williams and Austin Wondolowski extended the GreenWave’s’ lead on their next drive. Austin Wondlowski opened the drive with a 10-yard carry to secure the 1st down for the GreenWave. Williams handed off the ball to Wondolowski who was able to run right through the Bruins’ defense again. He ran into the endzone for a 32-yard rushing touchdown. Kicker, Curtis Robinson II continued his busy night, securing another extra point for the GreenWave, putting the score at 49-21 with 4:38 left in the half.

 

The GreenWave was not done yet! Jayvon Williams weaved his way downfield and right into the endzone for a 54-yard rushing touchdown. Kicker, Curtis Robinson II scored his 8th extra point of the night, putting the score at 56-21 with 2:19 left in the 3rd quarter.

 

The player of the game tonight was Jayvon Williams of the Holy Name GreenWave! He scored 4 of the 8 touchdowns for the GreenWave. He also had a 62-yard rushing touchdown, a 35-yard rushing touchdown and a 54-yard rushing touchdown. His leadership, speed, and quick thinking led the GreenWave to the regional title.

 

The Holy Name GreenWave will play Canfield next Friday, November 25 in Euclid for a chance to play in the state championship.
