TCU’s Late Gamble Almost Backfires as They Escape With 29-28 Over Baylor

With seconds racing off the clock, and trailing 28-26, TCU saw their dream season on the brink of ending when they ran the ball on third-and-7 with 22 seconds to go without any timeouts remaining as they attempted to get in Field Goal range. The run by Emari Demercado didn’t get a first down and TCU scrambled to run the field goal team onto the field as time nearly ran out on them. They managed to escape a gigantic disaster and get the 40-yard Field Goal off to seal the win as it sailed through the uprights from the leg of Griffin Kell.

Baylor had the Horned Frogs on the rope’s thanks in part to a 112-yard day on the ground from Craig Williams.  Fellow tailback Richard Reese rushed for 56 yards on 10 carries with a touchdown.  Baylor brought a balanced attack as they scored in 3 quarters, and also had a nice 269 yard passing day from Blake Shapan who went 21 of 30 passing with a touchdown and a pick.

For TCU, the Horned Frogs received a big effort from quarterback Max Duggan who tossed for 327 yards on 24 of 35 passing with a touchdown and a pick.  He also had a touchdown with his legs as he rushed 8 times for 50 yards.  His top threat was Taye Barber with 5 receptions for 77 yards.  The Horned Frogs also received rushing touchdowns from Kendre Miller and Emari Demercado.

Baylor had built a 28-20 fourth quarter lead when TCU rallied to score on a Emari Demercado 3-yard touchdown run with only 2:46 to go in the game.  They tried for a two pointer but the ensuing Duggan pass to Emari Demercado was no good.

With a full slate of timeouts still available to them, TCU opted against the onside kick and put things on their defense.  TCU used all three of its timeouts while forcing a three-and-out, and got the ball back with 1:34 left at its 31. Duggan took them on a game wining drive from there, converting a few third downs along the way.
