The Kent State football season has come and gone. An overtime win over Buffalo yesterday put Kent State at a 5-7 record for this 2022 season. This was not the season the Golden Flashes were expecting after making it to the MAC championship game last season, so what went wrong?
First and foremost the number one problem that put Kent State at a disadvantage this season was the out of conference schedule. Three of the first four games were played against Washington, Oklahoma, and Georgia. That put the season at a 1-3 start and from there Kent State would have to have gone 5-3 rest of the way to make a bowl game.
After the impressive game against Georgia is when MAC play began for the Golden Flashes, that game was against the Ohio Bobcats. The game saw a number of problems for the Flashes that would hurt the team going forward. Ball security became a problem for the Flashes, as well as the number of penalties.
Another major issue that was with the team all season was holding onto leads, the two examples of that was the game in Toledo and the final home where the Flashes played Eastern Michigan.
The Toledo game saw Kent State go up 21-0 in the first quarter, and rest of the way get out scored 52-10. For a final score of 52-31 Toledo. That was one example of the team not being able to hold on to a lead.
Next game, at home with the season on line. After the Bowling Green win, Kent State needed to win out to be bowl eligible. The Eastern Michigan game saw Kent State up 17-7 and not score again until late in the fourth quarter, the final saw Eastern Michigan win 31-24, ending Kent State’s chances of going to a bowl game.
Another issue was the replacement of Dustin Crum with Colin Schlee. Coming into the season Sean Lewis had stated that the teams goals were all the same with a quarterback change with Crum going pro. The offense had the same amount of talent as last season, but the inexperienced Schlee did not do what Crum was able to do in the 2019 and 2021 seasons, which was leading the offense to postseason football. Going forward this season can be used for Schlee and giving him experience, that will be a reason for optimism for the Flashes next season.
There are many things to remain positive about for next season. The out of conference schedule will not be as hard. Schlee having a full season of experience under his belt. Dante Cephas should be back for his senior season next year. Along with Devontez Walker, who will be a junior next year. Running back Marquez Cooper will also be returning next season.
A disappointing 2022 season can help lead to a better 2023 season with all the returning talent coming back for the Flashes.
