The Avon Lake wrestling team is off to a tremendous start to the season. They are fresh off a win over their arch rival Avon, and appear to be a top contender to win the SWC.
Hunter McHugh is off to an amazing start himself at 8-1 and has the Shoremen headed in the right direction. We caught up with Hunter and asked him what he believes has led to the strong start, “Coaching and leadership in our room has really helped. Nathan Perry leads by example. Al Hobar is a great vocal leader as well. We have up and comers like Jack Valerino, Clay Broadhurst along with Jack & Joe Marconi”, shared McHugh.
We also asked him how important the win over their rivals were?
“It felt really good, it was nice to get a win over them and be a part of it. Our coaches have done an amazing job of picking up the program and showing us where we can go, which is really high as we try to be the best in the conference”, said McHugh
Finally, perhaps what makes this squad so special is the fact that 5 females are on it, competing each week for a spot come meet time. Marleigh Lademann, Layla Patterson, Rejan Alhashash, Mili Secin and Hattie Hobar all hope to walk in the footsteps of Olympic Gold Medalist Tamyra Mensah Stock.
The influx of female talent is not lost on McHugh and his teammates as he had this to share, “It is really great as they bring an added energy and personality in the room. It is really cool to see them compete everyday and do well in matches. It’s a breath of fresh air for the wrestling room”.
Make sure to follow the Shoremen and Shoregals as they continue into the season. You can learn more about them at the link below.
