Surpassing Expectation: The First Taste of States

Compete he did, and it was an effort to be proud of for the new-coming athlete. Monte stepped up to the line for the start of the 110m hurdles with a prize on the finish line, and a heart ready to give a matching 110%.

A bullet out of the blocks at the sounding of the gun, Monte hurdled his way to a sixth place finish with a time of 15.01 seconds, claiming his place on the podium and collecting the first state medal of his high school career.

“I was relieved. My whole track season came to a nice end. I got on the podium and achieved my goal for the season. I did everything that I could ask for, and it was nice,” Monte said, regarding his season ending achievement.

However, that won’t be all for the rising star. With one medal hung around his neck, the hunger for more continues to grow. After an outstanding season performance as a freshman, the sky’s the limit for Monte, and he intends to strive for the peak of it.

“As a freshman, my season was great. But having stood sixth on the podium, that’s just going to fuel me for next year to get even higher and higher. I want to be even better than I was this year,” Monte stated.

He is prepared to deliver, too; his work ethic unmatchable as he describes how he plans to achieve his high set goals. With high school track finalized for the 2019 season, Monte shows no intend of hanging the spikes up just yet.

During the summer, he intends to continue practicing, working, and lifting in order to better his times; including continuing his competitive drive during the AAU track season with teammate Teddi Kinsey, a fellow hurdler and 2019 state qualifier.

“I don’t want to stop track”, Monte admitted, “I don’t know what else to do. For the past five months all I’ve done is run track and practice, and now that it’s over I don’t know what to do with myself.”
