Fireworks are something you usually see in the summer, but today there were some at Medina High School. From the opening tip both teams were playing at a very high pace and scoring the ball at will. Sidney Butera poured in 12 points in the first quarter, but Mackenzie Blackford added 10 of her own to give Solon a 21-16 lead after one.

The second quarter was much of the same. The pace was not slowing down, and neither was the shooting. The Comets were able to ring in four second quarter threes to extend their lead going into the break. Solon led 40-33 at the break behind 16 points from Blackford. Butera would not let the lead get too big as she already had 19 points at the half.

The third quarter is where Strongsville started to gain some momentum. The Mustangs started the quarter with a quick 4-0 run leading to a Solon timeout and cut the lead to three. Solon would settle down and let Blackford go to work. She added eight more points in the third to keep the seven point lead they had at the break. Kaeyln Gaymon hit a three at the buzzer and Solon led 53-46 with one quarter to play.

Strongsville again would start the fourth quarter off strong. They started the quarter on a 10-2 run to give them a 56-55 lead with five minutes to play. Blackford and Butera would trade big bucket after big bucket and with under a minute to play we were tied 61-61.

Again, Blackford and Butera traded buckets. Blackford got to the line and knocked down two free throws, but Butera answered with a layup to tie the game with less than 30 seconds left. Solon went back to the Blackford well one more time as she found her way to the basket and got fouled with 2.4 second to go. She drained both and the Comets defended the last second heave and they would win this incredible game 65-63.

Butera scored 29 points, but it just wasn’t enough for the Mustangs.

Coach Kruse would say after the game “ Did anyone else score a bucket in the second half other than Mack. There is a reason she has a division one scholarship. She’s just really good.”

The 36-point performance was incredible, and the Comets needed every one of them to move on to the district finals

  1. Great game Solon. Looks like Tucker should have rented an apartment for his daughter in Solon instead of Strongsville.
