The 16th seed Louisville Lady Leopards challenged the 18th seed Mentor Lady Cardinals in the second matchup at Valley Forge on Super Tuesday.

Louisville’s defense took away the inside shot as the Cardinals were forced to take contested shots or long distances threes. This defense allowed the Lady Jaguars to get ahead of the Cardinals by ten.

Brooke Haren led the Jaguars with a physical presence in the paint as she led her squad with 11 first half points. The Cardinals could not match up with the Jaguars as the mismatch was a killer in the first half.

The Jaguars dominated the first half of play, that changed quickly in the second half as the Mentor Cardinals scratched, clawed, and battled their way not just back in the game but with the lead. “We didn’t change much other than going from zone to man, they hurt us with that 5-0 run at the end of the half”. Said coach James Hrusovsky on what they changed in the second half

The start of the second half saw both teams battling back and forth, Louisville maintained their lead but saw it slowly slip away. Nina Rodriguez became the leader for the Cardinals, her effort on defense and shot creation on offense opened the game to the Cardinals as they brought the Jaguars lead to just one to end the third quarter.

Mentor obtained the lead at the start of the fourth quarter, Louisville kept the Cardinals arm’s length away as they struggled to convert on layups and chances inside the paint. It’s almost as if a lid was put on the basket for the Lady Jaguars.

With one minute left the Cardinals had a chance to close out the game, they missed three out of four free throws giving the Jaguars a chance to tie the game with 46 seconds remaining. A missed three attempt all but sealed the game for Cardinals sending themselves to the next round to face off against Magnificat. “We scrimmaged them the past few years, we feel like we are prepared for them” Said Coach James Hrusovsky.
