Ravenna, Ohio – The Medina Lady Battling Bees led from wire-to-wire in a 71-38 win over Hudson in Ravenna District semifinal #2.
Medina jumped out to a 10-0 lead three minutes into the quarter thanks to the efforts of Olivia Klanac and Sylvie Hipp.
“We wanted to come out and be energetic and enthusiastic on both ends of the court.” said Medina head coach Karen Kase. “We know Hudson’s a good team, they had a nice run in the tournament. They play some crafty defenses and we knew we had to get off to a good start and set the tone.”
However, the upset-minded Lady Explorers fought back, thanks to baskets from Elora Beh and Erin McCormick. That would be as close as Hudson got, as Molly Gilbert scored the last seven points of the first stanza, including a corner triple. Medina led 21-6 going into the second quarter, leading by as much as 29-11.
However, Hudson fought back once again, going on an 8-2 run to close out the quarter, making the score 31-19 at the half. Sienna Pinson scored all seven of her points in the stanza, and Erin McCormick drilled the first triple of the game for the Lady Explorers.
As the two teams traded buckets in the third quarter, the score stood at 43-30 thanks to a triple from Hudson senior Ella Kordos. Triples from Olivia Klanac and Addy Shook pushed the Medina lead to 49-30 at the end of the frame.
Medina went on a 7-0 run in the fourth with two layups and the ensuing free throws from Izzy Kurka. Although Hudson countered with an 8-1 run, the Battling Bees were just too much, scoring the last 14 of the game.
Junior Olivia Klanac led all scorers with 19 points, followed by senior forward Izzy Kurka with 12. Freshman guard Molly Gilbert had ten for the Lady Battling Bees.
Medina advances to take on Archbishop Hoban at Ravenna High School in the district championship on Friday, March 1. The Lady Battling Bees are looking for their first district championship since 2021.
Hudson finished their season at 11-14. Paige Sutton finished with ten points for the Lady Explorers, and Sienna Pinson finished with seven points.
