The score of this game does not tell the full story as the Bulldogs played hard and kept it close for the majority of the first half. Sadly, for the Bulldogs too many costly mistakes cost them big against one of the best teams in Division II.
Mason Wheeler started the opening drive with a 45-yard run on the game’s first play from scrimmage. It was followed by a Corbo pass for 9 yards and then a 31-yard touchdown run up the middle by Gage Duesler.
The Bulldogs responded and did exactly what they needed to do. A long and methodical drive that took 7 plus minutes off the clock and resulted in points. The drive that saw a vital fourth down conversion at one point, resulted in a 32-yard Field Goal from Drew Kanaba that would have been good from 42.
From there both teams played stout defense and the score remained 7-3 until Owen Wiley blasted through a 37-yard Field goal with plenty of room to spare. It was only moments after that when Sean Summers picked up a fumble and ran 24 yards to pay dirt to increase the lead to 17-3 with 3:28 left on the clock.
Olmsted Falls couldn’t move the ball, and when Avon Lake got it back again, they ran a great two-minute drive resulting in a 7-yard touchdown pass to Nathan Cikalo to give them a 24-3 lead at the break.
The Shoremen would tack on touchdown runs from Wheeler and Duesler in the second half to cap off the scoring at 38-3.
Nathan Cikalo had a huge game again tonight. Cikalo finished with 70 yards on 5 catches and the touchdown. Gage Duesler went for 80 yards on 14 carries, scoring twice. Mason Wheeler in his return went for 72 yards on 9 carries with a score.
Once again Michael Corbo was the straw that stirred the drink, as he was smart with the ball and did not turn it over. Corbo went 12 of 21 for 164 yards and a touchdown. He also ran 3 times for 17 yards.
For the Bulldogs, their top gainer from scrimmage was Andrew Parkowski with 47 yards on 10 carries. The Bulldogs will have plenty of time to work on things as they and Avon Lake both have a bye next week.
This Bulldog team is much better than that played at moments tonight, and at 4-2 they will turn heads in the playoffs. One night doesn’t define a team.
Avon Lake will be a very tough out for anyone as they improved to 5-1. Over the final five weeks of the season, they had two shutouts and only let up 3 total touchdowns.
Player of the game Nathan Cikalo 5 catches, 70 yards and a TD
