Summers & Wheeler Tell Emotional Story In Avon Lake 38-3 Win Over Olmsted Falls

It was an emotional night in Avon Lake as the Shoremen took down Olmsted Falls 38-3. If you are wondering how a 35-point victory can be dramatic and emotional, then allow me to tell you the whole story as once again, sports go off the field and the best stories can come from the heart.

Last year Sean Summers saw his 2019 season end Week One against Avon. He was a star linebacker and a captain.  His brutal injury led to a lost season and he had to watch a magical season for the Shoremen from the sidelines.

Any chance of Sean playing spring sports got wiped out because of the pandemic.  Then on top of all of that, he had to switch positions this season from Linebacker to Defensive back.

It’s funny how things work out, because Harry Hebert stepped up and had a big season at linebacker last year.  It also led to Michael Corbo stepping up as the starting quarterback after Hebert went to defense full time.  It worked out for Corbo, Hebert and the Shoremen as they won 11 straight.  But tonight, it worked out for Sean Summers.

It was almost impossible for Shoremen fans not to feel a little lump in the old throat watching him score on a fumble return late in the second quarter.  I’ve had Sean on the podcast a few times including this past week, and he is humble and hardworking.  To see it come full circle is a great feeling for anyone who spends time around the game and these amazing young men and women.

But Sean’s story isn’t the only one that had lumps in throats tonight.  Mason Wheeler was set to have a huge season this year before an injury took him out Week One vs Avon.

It was a scary enough injury to put him in the hospital for a night and have people praying everywhere.  Tonight, on his first run, he took it 45 yards.  Later in the game, he had a sack on defense and then finally a touchdown in the third quarter to put the game out of reach.

Let me make this clear, I DO NOT CARE WHO WINS OR LOSES, I just like seeing young athletes realize their dreams, and also bounce back from adversity.  Tonight, was one of the special moments that despite who you were rooting for, you couldn’t help but smile.

Now that the father in me has gotten his two cents in, the sportswriter in me will take over on page two with a full recap of tonight’s game.
