The Strongsville Mustangs broke away after the game was tight early, to cruise to a 64-41 win over the St. Joes Jaguars to capture a district championship. They were led by the sensational sophomore Sidney Butera with 22 while Sydney Bass and Kennedi Neale each had 12. Faith Rodak put in 10 while Eszter Dioszegi put in 6.
The Jaguars were led by Morgan Wearsch with 11, while Melanie Alvarenga, Ruth Becker and Bree White each had 8. The Jaguars were capped by Lily San Filippo and Brooke Haddad with 3 each. Ironically it was Lilly San Filippo confidentially stroking the final three of the game as the final second ticked away, perhaps a look into the bright future of the Jaguars.
It was close early as the Jaguars built a 5-2 lead before a Bass “and one” tied it. Then Ruthie Becker drained another one from deep to hand the Jaguars a 9-7 lead before the Mustangs went on a 8-0 run to finish the first quarter ahead 15-9. That mini run was fueled by the sharpshooting of Bass.
With 2:54 left in the second quarter, a Morgan Wearsch three cut the Mustang lead to 25-22 and gave SJA some serious life. Strongsville rebounded quickly however, finishing the half on a 7-0 run charged by big threes from Butera and Bass to send Strongsville into the locker room up 32-22 at the break.
The third quarter started off all Mustangs, when another three ball by Butera lifted them to a 39-22 lead, and for all purposes, putting the game away. They went on to lead 46-33 after three as St. Joes did put together a mini run to hang around.
Any chances of a miracle comeback were snuffed out to start the fourth quarter however as it was all Strongsville. The Mustangs scored the quarters first 18 points with all five of their starters getting into the act, expanding the lead to 64-33, handing them a 31 point lead and the district championship.
