The Holy Name Green Wave hosted the Strongsville Mustangs in a non-conference showdown that ended in a 60-43 loss for the hosts. Holy Name went off to a strong start, they failed to carry their momentum throughout the game due to turnovers being a continuing issue. Strongsville had an impressive team performance that should put the entire GCC on notice.

Both teams started off rumbling down the court with high effort plays as defenders from both sides seemed to jump passes in every direction. Holy Name took the early lead but couldn’t hold the Mustangs back from taking their first lead of the game.

The Mustangs denial defense led into a transition offense that the Green Wave could not keep up with in the first half. When Strongsville settled their offense down they picked apart the Waves defense with good off the ball movement as they spread the rock around for a balanced scoring attack.

The Green Wave fell beyond ten in the second quarter, They tried striking from three and went on a few runs. Sadly, for the Green Waves they couldn’t maintain this as Strongsville defense smothered Holy Name. Holy Name was nearly down 13 to start the second half, this was before Adam Humenik hit a last second half court shot to bring the Green Wave within 10 points. Strongsville led at half 34 to 24.

Strongsville kept the momentum despite the half court shot prior to the half. Nicholas Quirino led the Mustangs in the third quarter with eight points. The Green Wave fought back with Strongsville as all signs pointed at Holy Name making a come back towards the fourth quarter.

Justin Wypasek and company made sure Holy Name would never sniff the lead. His crafty ball handling made him seem impossible to guard while his step back three kept the defense humbled. As Holy Name tried to stay within 10, Wypasek proved to be too much for the Green Wave defenders.

Wypasek scored 22 points in the impressive victory as he always found a way to get to the basket. Nicholas Quirino, Nolan Beard, and Josh Byers combined for 32 points as they all scored in double digits.

For Holy Name Adam Humenik and Dorian Pettyway were the leading scorers in the loss with 16 and 10 respectively.
