Cleveland, Ohio – The Saint Ignatius Wildcats overcame a ten-point deficit in the second quarter to top visiting Akron Buchtel, 68-56 at Sullivan Gym on Saturday evening.
Buchtel got off to a fast start thanks to a pair of triples from Stevie Diamond and Khoi Thurmon. The Griffins sank four triples in the first quarter, and their first two put them ahead, 6-0. However, Ignatius responded with a mini-run of their own. The teams would trade baskets back-and-forth in a fast paced quarter, and ended it tied at 18.
The Griffin offense jumped out to a 10-0 run in the second quarter, leading by as much as 28-18. They would sink three more triples thanks to impressive ball movement and a great defensive effort.
Ignatius responded once again, this time with a 10-3 run, cutting the Griffin lead to 31-28 going into halftime.
The Wildcats would take the lead, 50-43, at the end of the third quarter. Ignatius started to get hot from deep thanks to the efforts of junior guard Ace Buckner. Buckner scored 14 points in the period and knocked down four triples. Carter Jackson also had a pair of scores to help the efforts.
The Wildcats would increase their lead to 59-47 in the fourth and hang on for the win from there.
Saint Ignatius improves to 11-6 overall. They host rival St. Edward High School on Friday, February 3rd. Ace Buckner led all scorers with 20 points, followed by 17 from Carter Jackson, and 11 from junior Reece Robinson.
Akron Buchtel drops to 13-6 overall. They play against Akron East on Friday, February 3rd, in the Akron City Series championship game. Senior guard Khoi Thurmon had 19 to lead the Griffins, followed by Jayden Maxwell’s 13, and Nevada commit Amire Robinson’s 12.
