CLEVELAND, OH – In a rematch from last years State Cup final, the St. Ignatius wildcats beat the St. Charles Prep Cardinals by a score of 4-0 at Krenzler field in downtown Cleveland. Unlike November’s cup final which went into double-overtime for a 1-0 win to St. Ignatius, this was a one-sided affair with the Wildcats controlling much of the game without any real threats from the Cardinals attack.
Both teams began the match cautiously passing the ball, searching for space in the opponent’s half with Ignatius applying pressure earlier on. In the 24th minute, senior Sam Trivisonno knocked in his first goal of the match on an assist from senior, Dom Ruggiero. A few minutes later in the 26th minute, Trivisonno assisted senior, Bryce Ince-Lovelace on a goal which put Ignatius up 2-0. Despite a few more chances and a Wildcats goal ruled out for a foul, the first half ended 2-0.
The second half kicked off with St. Ignatius immediately attacking St. Charles’ goal, with a 43rd minute goal from senior Nathan Gray, assisted by senior Brendan Meidenbauer. Ignatius kept up the pressure with another goal four minutes later. The Trivisonno-Ruggiero duo teamed up again, with Trivisonno’s second goal of the match on Ruggiero’s second assist. Both teams continued to battle throughout the second half, with each side availing of multiple substitutions. Despite some late pressure by Ignatius and a 75th minute shot just wide of the goal by St. Charles, the match ended 4-0.
This result takes St. Ignatius to 5-0-0 on the season and St. Charles to 1-4-2. St. Charles will take on St. Francis DeSales this Tuesday evening while St. Ignatius travel to Avon on Monday night.
