St. Edward, very quietly, may be one of the best teams, if not, the best team in Division One this season based on their defense alone. This team bends, but does not break and they continue to show no fear in any situation no matter the score, or position on the field.
Mix that powerful defense in with a strong armed and legged quarterback in Christian Ramos, and the Eagles are looking for another deep run into the postseason.
St. Ignatius outgained St. Edward 142 yards to 78 in the first half, but they still trailed 7-0 because of several mistakes at the break. Jaxon French went 9 of 16 for 100 yards in the half, but again, it wouldn’t matter because of four turnovers and a missed field goal.
The Wildcats had one chance after another squandered in the first half that they will now have to think about for another year until their next matchup with the St. Edward Eagles. The Eagles forced the Wildcats to fumble four times in the first half alone.
Those fumbles were mixed in with a missed 27-yard field goal by St. Ignatius, the half would close out 7-0 Eagles. The Eagles had their lone score on a Christian Ramos to Malachi Watkins connection from 11-yard outs in the front corner of the endzone.
The Eagles would tack on three more to their lead on a 22-yard Field goal from Noah Rios with 3:22 left in the third quarter. They would then pile on 7 more in the fourth quarter as Christian Ramos would break three tackles on a 34-yard scamper to pay dirt in the opening moments of the quarter.
A little bit later on, a CJ Hankins interception would seal the deal for St. Edward, and close out the 17-0 victory for the Eagles. Emmett Hanna of the Wildcats also had a pick at the one that could have resulted in another score.
This is their third straight victory over the Wildcasts going back to the 2018 playoffs. The Wildcats drop to 1-1 and will try to get back on track next week as they travel to Massillon Washington. The 3-1 Eagles who have now defeated Massillon, Mentor and Ignatius, will continue their buzz saw of a schedule as they host Bishop Sycamore.
