LAKEWOOD, OH – Casey Bullock returned behind center for the St. Ed’s Eagles just in time to lead them to a 42-7 victory over their rivals St. Ignatius. He went 12 of 16 passing for 257 yards with touchdown passes of 20, 29 and 14 yards. Head Coach Lombardo protected Bullock well, by keeping him upright and he came away completely untouched.
Bullock had no shortage of threats as numerous Eagles stepped up big tonight in their roles. Brandon White ran for 49 yards on 8 carries with a touchdown. He also caught 2 passes for 36 yards and a touchdown.
His top receiving threats were Kyan Mason with 2 catches for 54 yards and a touchdown. The sophomore Zach Hackleman with 3 catches for 62 yards and Brian Sullivan with 3 catches for 85 yards and a touchdown.
St. Ignatius quarterback Peyton Frontino had a night to forget, being held to 0 of 6 passing. The only positive movement St. Ignatius had with the ball came on the ground as Grant Washinton picked up 81 yards on 11 carries while Owen Colwell had 28 yards on 13 carries late into the evening. The other bright spot to build off of for the Wildcats would be the kick returning skills of Max Ritt who had 3 for a total of 125 yards.
Max Ritt took the opening kickoff 74 yards to set up the Wildcats in great field position. But the momentum wouldn’t last long as Frontino’s first pass was picked off by the Eagles Bradley Eaton. The Eagles put together a 5 play 65-yard drive to capitalize. The big play coming on a 42-yard Bullock to Zach Hackleman strike. They would eventually cash in on the 11-yard White touchdown run on fourth and 1. This made it 7-0 Eagles just minutes into the game.
The second Wildcats possession fell apart quickly with two sacks. The Eagles took over near midfield and went right back to work. Once again after a few first downs, they faced a fourth and 1, this time they went up the middle to a linebacker Nate Gregory for the first down. A few moments later it was Jon Slaper time from the one to pound it in. This increased the Eagle lead to 14-0 with 2:31 left in the first quarter.
The Wildcats got cooking on the next drive with the run game as Washington ripped off runs of 26 and 32 yards. One of which was aided by a 15-yard personal foul tacked onto the end of it. This presented the Wildcats a first and goal from the 1-yard line. Josh Papesh checked in the game and snuck it in for the Wildcat touchdown.
Suddenly with a bit of momentum on their side, the Wildcats went for the onside kick and recovered it, however it was called back with illegal procedure and the ball was given to the Eagles at the 47-yard line. The Eagles couldn’t do much with it and actually were stopped on a three and out.
A little later the Eagles would get it back again near midfield, and this time they put together a nice drive. It was White again scoring, except this time through the air as he took a pass from Bullock 20 yards to the endzone. It was now 21-7 Eagles with 5:19 left in the half.
The Eagles tacked on more points before the half as a two-minute drive led to a 29-yard touchdown pass from Bullock to Kyan Mason. This latest Eagle strike earned St. Eds a 28-7 halftime lead.
The Eagles started the second half soaring with a 55-yard pass play to Brian Sullivan, placing the ball at the Wildcats 17-yard line. A few plays later it was Sullivan again, this time from 14 yards out to put the game out of reach at 35-7.
The Eagles began their next drive from the Wildcats 40-yard line as St. Ignatius simply couldn’t get a single first down with the ball yet again. They wasted no time as Kyan Mason took a jet sweep 35 yards out to set up shop for the Eagles. A short second later, it was Jon Slaper doing it again across the goal line. For the second straight year, the running clock was placed in motion at 42-7 with over 4 minutes left in the third quarter.
The Eagles went on to win by that same score. St. Ed’s will host Clarkson North next week while the St. Ignatius Wildcats travel to take on Moeller.
Eds 14 14 14 0 = 42
Ignatius 0 7 0 0 = 7
