It was a battle of the super powers tonight as the #1 team in Division One St. Ed’s defeated the #1 team in Division Two Hoban, by a score of 41-20 at Lakewood Stadium. The Madhouse at Madison was rocking all night long as the states two best teams, collided.
Marvin Bell paced the Eagles tonight with a huge effort off the bench after starting tailback Joshua Gribble went down to injury in the first half. Bell finished the night with three trips to the endzone as he tallied 132 yards on 16 carries. Starting quarterback Casey Bullock showed everyone why he is one of the most mobile QB’s in the state as he picked up 111 yards on 18 carries while scoring twice. Bullock also threw for 128 yards on 8 of 16 passing with a 66 yard touchdown to Brian Sullivan.
Lamar Sperling did what Lamar Sperling does for Hoban, as he piled up 163 yards on 30 carries with 2 scores. Quarterback Jacqai Long was held in check with 107 yards passing on 10 of 17 with a touchdown and a pick.
Each team scored the first time they touched the ball as Casey Bullock rumbled for a 9 yard touchdown run and Lamar Sperling scored on a 17 yard touchdown scamper as well. After both teams fumbled near midfield on back to back plays, they would both respond with two more touchdown runs to make it 14-13 in the middle of the second quarter.
The Eagles would then close the first half with consecutive touchdown drives to go up at half 28-13 as Bullock and Bell once again crossed the goaline. Hoban fell behind as far as 34-13 in the third quarter after a Bullock to Sullivan touchdown hookup, but then creeped back in with a touchdown pass of their own from Long to Payton Cook from 32 yards out to cut the lead to 34-20. St. Ed’s would hang on from there for the 41-20 victory.
