LAKEWOOD, OH – It was all St. Ed’s from start to finish today in Lakewood as the Eagles defeated the Bishop McNamara Mustangs 57-19. The Mustangs traveled in from Maryland and a long day was waiting for them.
The lead producers were the “Big 3” for St. Ed’s as Brandon White ran wild for 129 yards on 16 carries with 2 touchdowns. Zach Hackleman caught 6 balls for 156 yards with 3 touchdowns while quarterback Johnny Evanchick threw for 111 yards and 3 touchdowns on 8 of 12 passing, all in the first half. Langston Lucas played quarterback the entire second half and tossed two touchdown passes as well.
St. Ed’s started the game with a double back set of Tyrese Buchanan and Brandon White as they motored the ball down the field. White carried the bulk of the load however as he had 7 carries for 35 yards which set up a 12-yard touchdown pass to Tyrese Buchanan. This handed the Eagles a 7-0 lead to start the game with 7:26 to play in the opening quarter.
The Mustangs ran a hurry up offense but couldn’t get much going before having to punt it back to the Eagles at their own 20. It didn’t take long until Evanchick found Hackleman for a 51-yard bomb touchdown pass. No one was within 20 yards of Hackleman as he scored to make it 14-0 with 25 seconds left in the first quarter.
A Landon Lehmer interception gave the Eagles the ball back to start the second quarter. Not long after that, the Eagles converted the turnover into points on a White 13-yard touchdown run, his 9th of the young season. This increased the Eagle lead to 21-0.
The Mustangs answered on their next drive with a 28-yard touchdown pass from Underwood to Sedgwick. The Eagles wasted no time responding quickly however as Brandon White snuck through a huge pile, stayed upright and took off for a 28-yard touchdown run. This extended their lead to 22 at 28-6 with 4:24 to play. The Eagles tacked one more on before half, a 21-yard touchdown toss to Hackleman to hand them a 35-6 lead at the break.
The Mustangs came out firing to start the second half after the kickoff return placed them at midfield. A few plays later they found paydirt on a direct snap to Denson for a 2 yard touchdown to cut the lead to 35-13.
The Eagles answered on their next drive, this one led by Langston Lucas who converted a fourth down along the way. The score coming on a 59-yard launch to Zach Hackleman to increase the lead to 43-13 after a two point conversion from Joe Moore. The Mustangs didn’t blink and answered right back as a 71-yard launch to Alex Springs set up an 8-yard touchdown toss to Xavier Brown. Cutting the lead to 43-19 with 3:38 to play.
The Eagles were unfazed as Brodon Moore took the ensuing kickoff 95 yards to paydirt to increase the lead right back up to 31 at 50-19 with 2:29 to play in the third and cruised from there with the clock running,.
