Parma, OH – It was nip and tuck on a nippy night in Parma as the St. Ed’s Eagles jumped out to a 1-0 lead 17 minutes into the match, and then made it stand the final 63 minutes for the victory tonight at Padua. Their lone goal was scored by Mark Davis while their goalkeeper Will Day preserved the shutout. It was also a clean match as not a single card was drawn.
Things got off to a slow start as the first 15 minutes of action only saw one shot on goal which was saved by Padua. The Bruins then had a nice-looking cross result in a corner kick attempt in the 32nd minute, but it was to no avail as the game remained scoreless.
St. Ed’s began the scoring in the 17th minute with a goal from Mark Davis. He cut in front of the defender at the perfect moment for his shot to achieve the angle needed. This one-on-one strike put the Eagles ahead 1-0 with 22:53 to go.
Padua had a chance at the equalizer in the 16th minute, but the Ed’s goalkeeper Day came out to snag it. Yet again, Padua had a nice look at the net that was turned away in the 13th minute. St. Ed’s had a chance to extend the lead to 2-0 at one point in the 31rst minute but a diving Padua save by Joseph Belfiore in the lower left corner kept it at 1-0. The play began to be ultra physical and darn right chippy for a few moments until we reached the half, with the score remaining tied at 0.
The Bruins had multiple chances to get one in the net in the second half but couldn’t seem to get it done. The Bruins had a nice-looking free kick in the 54th minute, but it was turned away by Lavelle. Shortly after, the Eagles had a long clearance by day, to keep the Bruins at bay. The Bruins had a nice free kick chance with 14 minutes to go but sailed it over the goal.
The last serious threat Padua had to tie the match was with four minutes remaining and a free kick lined up just outside of the 18. The kick tailed in and was placed perfectly for a Bruin header to tie, sadly for Padua however the shot hooked just east of the net.
The Eagles hung on to win, 1 – 0 on the road. The Eagles will look to stay hot as they host Bay High this Monday night. Padua looks to bounce back this Monday night at CVCA.
A special shoutout to the junior varsity team that landed their first win of the season with a 2-0 victory. In that game, they had goals by Landon Hannigan and Ben Crane.
