LAKEWOOD, OH –  The Eagles used smothering defense to cause double digit turnovers along with red hot outside shooting to defeat the visiting Lakewood Rangers 83-50 tonight at home.  They hit 9 from long range including a red hot second quarter that saw 5 triples.

The Eagles were led by Zymir Knox with 18 while Carson Link had 15 and Bryan Vlosich had 13.  JT Kelsheimer hustled for 8 points while Kalen Gettis had 6 and Dustin Hess had 4.  Also finishing with 4 was Cole Arbogast while Sam Variglotti and Will Briggs each finished with 3.  Rounding out the scoring for the Eagles was Mike Williams with 2.

For the Rangers, they were led by Riley Verderber with 14 while Kavontah Swain and Joey Dolan each 8.  Liam McGann and Mekhi Williams each had 7 while Rory Chanter scored 6 and Nathan Bruwer 4.

The Eagles jumped out to a quick 10-6 lead, thanks in part to 8 points from Knox who started off red hot.  The scoring slowed down from there as the first quarter fell into a crawl mode and finished with the Eagles up 14-7.

3 minutes into the second quarter, the Eagles found their first double digit lead of the night at 21-11 with a Carson Link triple. Moments later, a beautiful pick pocket by Kelsheimer led to another three pointer by Link and forced a Lakewood timeout as the Rangers suddenly trailed 24-11.  The Eagles controlled the pace from there to lead 44-22.

The Rangers switched to a 3-2 zone to start the second in an effort to cool off the hot shooting and mismatches created by the man to man.  It didn’t help as the Eagles started on a 7-2 run, complete with a slam from Knox.  About a minute later, Cole Arbogast joined the dunk party with one himself, to increase the Eagle lead to 57-30.  The Rangers responded with 7 straight to close within 20.  The Eagles held on to take a 62-37 as the Eagles finished on a 5-0 run.

The Rangers showed some life to start the fourth quarter outscoring the Eagles 10-7, but it wasn’t nearly enough as St. Ed’s cruised to the 83-50 victory.
