Sperling’s big night on offense sparks Hoban rout over Akron SVSM, 47-7

Akron, Ohio – Ohio Mr. Football candidate and Buffalo commit Lamar Sperling had 29 carries for 286 yards and five scores Friday night to propel Hoban to a 47-7 win over rival St. Vincent-St. Mary in Division II, Region 5 action Friday night.

The Fighting Irish got off to a nice start, moving the ball deep into Knight territory thanks to a long run from senior Santino Harper. However, the drive would come up empty due to a missed field goal.

Hoban utilized the rainy conditions to their advantage and utilized Lamar Sperling early and often. He scored his first touchdown from four yards out to put the Knights on top, 7-0. The defense forced a three-and-out, and thanks to a blocked punt from junior Xavier Williams, set up shop at the SVSM 1. Sperling would punch it in to add to the lead, 13-0.

Williams himself would take a handoff 60 yards to the house to increase the lead to 20-0 late in the first.

The Fighting Irish got on the board early in the second quarter, thanks to a 47 yard touchdown run from senior D’Anthony Kelker. He had eight carries for 95 yards.

Hoban responded on the next possession. Lamar Sperling took a direct snap 40 yards to the house. This made the lead 27-7 with 6:59 left in the second. Sperling added one more score later in the quarter to put the Knights up 33-7 going into the half.

In the third quarter, JacQuai Long found Jayvian Crable for a 33 yard touchdown reception. This increased the lead to 40-7, triggering the running clock. Long completed all five of his passes for 81 yards.

Finally, Lamar Sperling scored his fifth touchdown of the game from 12 yards out to cap the scoring.

Hoban’s defense also stepped up, with two fumble recoveries and an interception.

Hoban advances to play against Hudson next Friday at a site to be determined.
