BEREA,OH – It only took one game to knock the rust off and return to form as the Titans shook off last night and came back strong tonight with a convincing 45-27 win over North Olmsted at home. It may have been cold outside, but several Titans were scorching the nets inside.
The Titan attack started red hot and seldom slowed down. They jumped out to a 10-5 lead on the strength of two three balls by Courtney Simon, combined with buckets from Athena Sevastos and Jenna Bycznski.
Simon was sinking them nothing but net from the corner, while Bycznski was using her frame to position under the hoop and take it to the hole. Nice shots by both Jenna Cvijovic and Brooklyn Beeman kept the Eagles in it early.
Both teams passed the ball well early on as the first quarter ended 16-9 with 8 different players scoring combined. Beeman had 5, Bokisa 2 and Cvijovic 2 for the Eagles. For the Titans, Sevastos had 4, Simon 6, while Bycznski, Seballos and Yee had 2 each.
The North Olmsted Eagles defense came out aggressive and shut down the Titans for the first two plus minutes of the second quarter while they cut into the lead at 16-11. The Eagles were doing a tremendous job flocking to the ball and crowding the key. The Titans would bust through eventually after 3 plus minutes when Courtney Simon converted a turnover into a bucket. At the 4:33 mark of the quarter Jenna Bycznski would pick up her third foul, forcing the Titans to adjust around it.
The adjustment would work as only a few seconds later it was Julia Nofel burying a three to extend the lead to 21-11. One thing that kept the Eagles in it in the first half was the foul differential. The half would end with the Titans being called for a whopping 10 fouls while the Eagles finished with half that. The Eagles were able to convert those into 5 points from the charity stripe, but the Titans still held a commanding 25-16 lead at the break.
The Titans would control the Third quarter by going back inside and attacking the paint. They raced out to a 36-17 start thanks in part to 5 points from Bycznski and 2 each from Sevastos, Seballos and Yee. The Titans would take each turnover by the Eagles, and push the action for points to put the game out of reach 39-23 by the end of the quarter. Beeman had 5 in the quarter for the Eagles including three from the foul line.
The game would end 45-27 with the Titans on top. The Titans would finish with 3 players in double digits as Simon had 13, Bycznski 11 and Sevastos 10. Yee and Seballos had 4 each while Julianne Evanko with 2. The Eagles Brooklyn Beeman scored 11.
I don’t normally do this, but I’m going to name a player of the game. Tonight’s player of the game is Athena Sevastos of Berea-Midpark. She was the only player to score in every quarter and played defense like the game was tied all night. Sevastos continues to show heart and hustle as her Senior season approaches it’s stretch run.
