Sanchez Rushes Holy Name Past Lakewood

Kee On Sports relies on the generous support of their sponsors to survive and continue to be one of the premier sources for High School Sports content. We are still very much in need for sponsorship funding for the final 14 weeks of 2021. If you own a small business, or know anyone who does, please have them contact Vince McKee atΒ coachvin14@yahoo.comΒ to talk about what we can do for you.

After Lakewood’s first possession was a three and out, the Green Wave went to Sanchez on the second play of the possession. Kristian Sanchez rolled up the middle for 47 yards. Lakewood players were bouncing off of him. This would set the tone for the rest of the game.

Three plays later Sanchez would rumble up the right sideline for a 26-yard touchdown and after the extra point, the score was 7-0 Holy Name. That was the score at the end of the first quarter.

Lakewood had lots of fight in them, especially in the first half. On their next possession, they would grind it out plenty of yards. They held the ball for a long time and kept Sanchez and the Green Wave off the field. The Lakewood drive culminated in a 17-yard pass from Senior Quarterback Lucas Winters to Junior Wide Receiver Eddie Gillick. Lakewood’s extra point was no good, and the score was now 7 to 6 Holy Name.

Then after a fumbled kickoff by Holy Name, even though they recovered the fumble they were deep in their own territory at the nine yard line. After a three and out, a short punt left Lakewood with great field position.

Lakewood took full advantage, despite their fourth offsides penalty of the game. The very next play, quarterback Winters faked a hand off to star running back Hakeem Quran and ran off left tackle and then up the sideline for a 46 yard touchdown. Lakewood tried for a two-point conversion and missed. The score was now 12 to 7 Lakewood with 5 minutes and 42 seconds left in the half.

Then with time running out in the first half Sanchez was getting most of the carries for the Green Wave. Sanchez lumbered towards the end zone, he fumbled and the ball popped up in the air. Lineman Mason Craycraft grabbed the ball at the two yard line and plunged into the end zone for a touchdown. The score at halftime was 14 to 12 Green Wave lead.

As well as Lakewood played in the first half, they had no answer for the big running back Sanchez. He had 164 yards on the ground in the first half alone. Lakewood’s star running back Quran had only 40 yards on 15 carries.

To start the second half Holy Name rested Sanchez, and inserted Senior Running Back Richard Jordan, who is speedy and a great counterpart to the aggressive pounding running style of Sanchez. The Lakewood defense seemed to be getting tired halfway through the third quarter. And then Sanchez came back into the game and scored a touchdown with 7:53 left in the third quarter. The score was now 21-12 Green Wave.

On a key play by Sanchez, after a 20-yard rumble up the middle, on the very next play Sanchez showed his athleticism and field awareness.

From 7 yards out Sanchez started left on a run, saw there was nothing there and the big running back changed directions on a dime and went right in to the end zone.

Lakewood never gave up, they tried as hard as they could until the very end of the game. The final score was 28 to 12 Green Wave.

Sanchez had 271 yards on the ground for the game, and almost 11 yards per carry average.

Holy Name left Lakewood with a victory. Lakewood has lost two in a row to really good teams, and we will see where the rest of the season goes for both of these programs.

Player Of The Game: Holy Name Running Back Kriztion Sanchez: 271 yards running on 25 carries
