Ryan Day: Fired If He Loses to The Team Up North?

Based on what Paul Finebaum said earlier today, Ohio State head coach Ryan Day could be in the hot seat this next offseason. Amid his record as a head coach and his ability to lead the Buckeyes to three straight College Football Playoff Appearances, If Coach Day is not able to do these two things he will most likely not be in Columbus for the 2025 season: beat The Team Up North (Michigan), and make a deep run in the playoffs.

According to Sports Illustrated, Finebaum stated “If he beats Michigan and has a good run at the playoffs, maybe not a championship, most people move on. But if he loses to Michigan and then suffers an early loss in the playoffs, I wouldn’t be surprised if he got fired, despite his record.”

Ryan Day’s Resume

Ryan Day has a total record of 56-8 and has a record of 39-3 in Big Ten conference play. Some might look at these numbers and think that it is crazy to be calling for a coach that has one of the greatest winning percentages of all time to be fired but I personally think that it is warranted.

Main Objective: Beat The TTUN

A national championship is always great to obtain, but us as fans and writers know that it takes a little luck to be the last one standing at the end of the season. An objective that is something that can be done and is one of the main priorities of the Buckeyes players and fans each season: beat The Team Up North. In the last three seasons, Coach Day and the Buckeyes have not been able to do that. Over the course of the last 3 meetings, the Buckeyes have lost each game on average by two touchdowns.

Coach Day’s Roster

Ryan Day has arguably the best roster assembled in college football this season, maybe the best team he has ever been a head coach of during his time with the Buckeyes.

With a defense that was second in points per game last season and returning 9 of their starters, this defense will look to repeat as many seniors on that side of the ball came back for the sole purpose of beating Michigan.

The Buckeyes were able to land arguably the best offensive and the best defensive players in the transfer portal in Quinshon Judkins and Caleb Downs.

The offense has 5-star recruits and talented players all over the field. Whether it be in the backfield with Judkins and Treyveon Henderson, or at wide reciever with guys like Carnell Tate and Jeremiah Smith, or even our talented tight end Gee Scott Jr., This Buckeyes offense has playmakers all over the field.

If Coach Day is not able to break the 3-game losing streak and bring the pride and joy of winning the best rivalry in college football back to Columbus, he might be packing his bags and catching a flight out of Columbus as soon as the season is over.

Final Analysis

I am a believer in Ryan Day and truly want to see him succeed as a head coach. If he can break that streak and overcome what the Buckeyes have not been able to do the last 3 years in terms of beating The Team Up North and winning the Big Ten championship, everyone will move on and his status as a great coach will be restored. He just has to do what great coaches like Urban Meyer and Jim Tressel did in their time in Columbus, and that is when it is crunch time and a play needs to be made, find the player that will make the big-time plays in the big-time moments when it is needed most.
