Ryan Clapham had herself a big second quarter draining 3 consecutive three pointers to awake a sleeping Eagle offense and lead them to victory over their cross town rivals the Avon Lake Shoregals. Clapham had all 9 of her points for the game come in that quarter.
Claphams backcourt teammate Brooke Laub had 7. Abby Liber led the Eagles in scoring with 11, including 6 points from long range. The Shoregals were short handed tonight, missing one of their best scorers in Hailey Hodge. Emma Knick filled the void and led the Shoregals with 16 points. Knick was also the only player in this game to score in each quarter.
It was 3-2 Avon Lake after one as both teams struggled from the field in the first quarter. The Shoregals didn’t get their first point until the 4:22 mark on a Kiley Boutin foul shot. Alyssa Peganoff picked up the only points in the quarter for the Eagles with a breakaway layup after the pass from Grace Santee at the 1:03 mark.
The second quarter became a shootout between Ryan Clapham of Avon and Emma Knick of Avon Lake as they began to duel. Knick would finish with 7 in the quarter, while Ryan Clapham got red hot from three ball land and hit three straight in the second quarter.
The Clapham explosion would help the Eagles build a 14-13 halftime lead. The only thing as impressive as Ryan’s shooting tonight appeared to be the dancing of one young fan wearing her jersey in the crowd. That little feller has a future Dancing with The Stars.
The game remained tight into the third where Avon was unable to get a two-possession lead until the 3-minute mark when Abby Liber went the distance of the court with a tremendous underhand layup with a defender on her, to give the Eagles a 18-14 lead. The Eagles would stay in front the rest of the quarter and hold a slim 20-18 advantage after three.
At the 6:42 mark of the fourth, an Emily Yarham put back of her missed layup made it a one-point game at 21-20. A vital Abby Liber 3 pointer from the top of the key, reclaimed the Eagles a 4-point lead at 24-20 with 4:12 remaining in the contest.
The Eagles would hang on for the win thanks in part to a combined 8 made fouls shots in the fourth quarter alone between Abby Liber (3) and Brooke Laub (5). Solid foul shooting and defense brought the Eagles the win tonight over their rivals.
