Avon Lake was locked in from the start of the game, not letting Kenston even get pass the half line before they stole possession from the Bombers and scored the first goal in less than forty seconds of the start of the game. Kenston was on alert as the defense ramped up but it just wasn’t enough with the constant pressure that Avon Lake applied. #28 Ryan Gibel got the assist from #4 Nathan Leprevost to score the second goal of the game increase the score to 2-0 in favor of Avon Lake.
This game was fast moving as the Bombers did sit tight with those two goals and made a play on the pluck, #12 Gavin Rowell coming up with the steal and Goal. Not too long after this did Rowell come in with another goal after multiple saves from Avon Lake, He attacked at the right angle and swooped in for a sneaky goal to make the score 2-2. All of this occurred within the first 10 minutes of the game. I’ve been to amateur and watched pro Hockey games before but the intensity from these high schoolers was something different. The first period ended at 2-2 with both teams not willing to give an inch to the other.
The second period opened up with both teams battling back and forth, neither team really having control for the first 5 minutes. And then came the blue bomber named Gavin Rowell with a third goal, giving Kenston the lead and making him the leading scorer for the game with three goals all to himself. Rowell is truly something special. Gavin had his footprint all over this game as he went for another goal at the four minute mark and was successful and this was a goal scored undermanned as #14 Charlie McBride, went to the penalty box. This gave him four goals under some pressure and the Shoremen were still having a tough time stopping him.
Third period came around and the pressure was at its highest for Avon Lake, being down two goals was not where they envisioned themselves. So how did they respond? With a goal in the first three minutes by #25, Noah Logertman to make the score 4-3 and shrink that lead. The third period was looking like a defensive clash from both teams, with multiple steals and saves until… Yes, you guessed it, Gavin Rowell got ahold of the puck on a steal and took it all the way down the rink for his FIFTH goal.
This game was action packed and full of intensity the entire way through. The Kenston Bombers managed to not only even the score with the Avon Lake Shoremen but they took home the Baron Cup. Gavin Rowell gets the MVP of the game, he had all five goals for Kenston and was a force to be reckoned with on the rink. His quick decision making not only opened the floor up for his teammates but it led the Bombers to 5-3 victory and a championship for the year.
