Roosevelt Outlasts Copley in High Scoring Affair

Kent, OH– On September 16th, the Roosevelt Rough Riders kicked off their fifth game of the season against Copley. The Rough Riders amassed 59 points, while Copley was restricted to 50. Hundreds of fans supported their teams on the warm and sunny day. The Rough Riders now possess a 2-3 record and Copley a 1-4 record after tonight’s game for the 2022-2023 season. 

FIRST HALF

The first quarter was good for both teams as they both scored earlier in the game. By the end of the quarter with 2:32 left on the clock, the Rough Riders were able to put more points on the scoreboard with another touchdown and point after attempt. Roosevelt climbed to within two points behind Copley with a score of 12-15. 

Roosevelt started out dominating the second quarter with a touchdown from Donovan Daetwyler. However, the kick by Jaden Dennison was no good. Halfway through the second quarter, Roosevelt went on a run with a 56 yard touchdown by Donovan Mitchell. The kick was good, bringing the score to 26-15.

Copley made a comeback with only a few minutes left in the first half with a touchdown and completed the kick. Roosevelt’s freshman, Jaiden Portis, made a touchdown with a completed extra point. The first half ended with Copley in the lead 26-29. 

SECOND HALF

Roosevelt scored quickly coming out of halftime with a 55-yard pick six from Jon Jon Smith. Following shortly after, Michael Bonanno would get into the endzone, bringing the score to 40-29. Copley refused to give the game up however. A Daone Owens touchdown kept them in the hunt.

Copley’s defense began to pick up as Daone Owens intercepted a pass, which led to the Indians regaining the advantage at the conclusion of the third quarter, 40-43.

Roosevelt scored early in the fourth quarter with a 16 yard touchdown from Tyler Heritage. Copley and Roosevelt were tied most of the quarter until the last 3 minutes, when Landon Fabry from Roosevelt scored a touchdown.

Copley stayed close in the game with a 70 yard touchdown from Daone Owens. With only two minutes left on the clock, only two points separated Roosevelt from Copley. Michael Bonnano secured the win with a touchdown. Roosevelt won the game 59-50.

Copley will play Cuyahoga Falls next week at home. The Roosevelt Roughriders will play away at Highland.
