The Rocky River Pirates (10-4) took a bus ride to conference foe Fairview Warriors (0-7), as you can tell by the records it’s been a different story so far for both teams. The Pirates have started the season off strong as they are led by Ava Patti, Natalie Swallow, and Kelsey Murphy. These three lead the Pirates in all statistical categories for the first half of the season.
The Pirates came out of the gates strong as they scored eleven straight unanswered points against the Warriors. It wasn’t until Sophomore number 24 Elizabeth Hille hit a three around the five-minute mark to give the Warriors their first points. The Warriors would try and stay strong on defense, but it wouldn’t be enough to stop the Pirates and leading scorer Kelsey Murphy from taking a first quarter lead 12 to 7.
Gabby Davenport tried to lead the Warriors on a second quarter comeback, but no matter what Davenport and company did they couldn’t figure out the zone defense that coach Elaine Robinson drew up for the Pirates. This zone would clog up the passing lanes and create transition offense for the Pirates guards.
The first half would be one sided in favor of the Pirates from Rocky River 39-13; the Warriors would look to come up with an offensive strategy as they headed into half.
As the second half started it would be more of the same as the Pirates would increase their lead. This was too due to the combination of offensive rebounds and turnovers from their zone defense.
The Pirates offense proved to be a welled oil machine, they did this by multiplying offensive chances through rebounding and defense and could move Fairview’s defense with ball fakes and off ball movement from every player on the court.
We would head into the 4th quarter with a Pirates lead of 58-13 leaving the Warriors scoreless in the 3rd. Fairview would come out strong on defense but still lacked any momentum on offense.
Both teams struggled on offense to start the 4th as the first points for the quarter would come from Fairview as Hille would score her first points since the start of the game. Rocky River would follow up right after to increase their lead for the final time.
The final score was 60-14 as Fairview’s losing streak extends to eight. Junior Annika Mocho was the player to watch in today’s contest as she led the Pirates in scoring with 13 points.
