The Padua Bruins fought hard tonight, looking much improved from their road game earlier this week at Brecksville, but it was still not enough as they lost their home opener tonight 9-3 against the Riverside Beavers. The Beavers were paced from a terrific night from Marygrace Hendershot who scored 4 goals, while Mady Waner had 2 and 3 others scored a goal each. Those players scoring once each were the trio of Emma West, Maddie Victor and Avery Wright.
For the Bruins, as mentioned, they looked vastly better tonight and quite frankly, a few free possessions away from making this a game late. It was the lack of free possession goal scoring that hurt them and will be a focus of improvement as the year a goes on. If they kind find a way to convert those, they can be dangerous. Their goals came from the sticks of Ava Bonfilli, Emma Takacs and Anna Kwiatkowski. Also, a special shoutout to Maddie Royer who made her first start tonight as a freshman. This Bruin team is young, and as the season goes on, will only continue to improve.
The Padua Bruins opened the home session of their season with a goal, only 11 seconds into it when Emma Takacs connected with a shot to get the Bruins on the board. The ball literally got knocked up in the air, she caught it in her sack, cradled it, and just bolted down field in a straight line past everyone until she got 3 feet in front of the goal and whipped it in for the point. It was fast, furious and effective!
The Beavers wasted no time in coming back and knotting it up at one goal apiece when after winning the next faceoff, they took it down and controlled the pace when eventually Marygrace Hendershot, found her shot and connected. Wildly after 2 goals in the first 61 second of game action, there wasn’t another one the rest of the quarter as it remained 1-1 after 12 minutes of action.
Padua had a fabulous opportunity to score on a free possession a little over 3 minutes int the second quarter, but the shot was a little late, and a little high and sailed past the net. With the ball back in the possession of Riverside, they wasted no time getting down the field to score and capture their first lead of the game at 2-1 with 7:59 to play in the second with another goal by Hendershot.
The Bruins had another crack at scoring near the 3:30 mark but couldn’t get it to go as it was scooped and saved by Beaver goaltender Aubrie Russell-Armstong. Only moments later, the Bruins received another nice look, but turned it over on the charge in, keeping things at 2-1 Beavers. The game remained 2-1 as we headed to the break.
It took nearly five minutes for the second half to get its first serious look at a goal, and once again, it came from the stick of Hendershot. She broke through the crowd and pierced a shot through to extend the lead to 3-1. Less than 30 seconds later, another Beaver got into scoring action when Maddie Victor scored her first goal of the season, to widen the lead to 4-1 with 6:03 to go.
The Beavers just kept pouring it on, scoring 4 more goals before the quarter was over to take an 8-2 lead into the fourth. The goals coming from Avery Wright, Mady Warner ( 2x) and Hendershot with her 4th of the night . The lone Bruin goal came from Anna Kwiatkowski. The Beavers went on to win by a final score of 9-3.
