Libby Lang dominated the middle for 16 points in the River Pirates 62-34 victory over the North Olmsted Eagles tonight. Nora Bruder lit up the outside for 22 more while Olivia Dewey and Angelina Swallow combined for 9 more from deep. Claudia Roche had 6 while Regan Kane came off the bench strong for 5 while Maria Petrulis had 4.
The Eagles were led in scoring by Guiliana Sharp with 11 while Katja Colombo had 6 and Ciana DiMatteo had 4. Peyton Johnson and Amaya Capps had 3 each while Layanne Zahriyeh and Abby Quarles each finished with 2.
What a special moment for Quarles who scored the first two points of her varsity career. For Quarles, it is easy to see why this feisty freshman will have a long successful career with the Eagles with her instant energy off the bench and fearless shooting.
The Eagle started off red hot with a 5-0 lead as shots by Johnson and Dimatteo were set up perfectly from Capps penetration. River responded with a 7-0 run on the strength of inside buckets from Lang and a long-range bomb from Swallow. Another sharp pass from Capps to Dimatteo got it tied back up at 7 before the Pirates finished the quarter on a serious run of 15-7 after Capps picked up her second foul. The Pirates led 29-14 after one.
The Pirates stayed red hot in a dominant second quarter that saw back to back to back three pointers from Bruder and Dewey to stretch the lead to 38-14. It didn’t stop from there as the Pirates kept rolling to 17 straight points until a Sharp bucket by the Eagles finally stopped it at 46-16.
The second half started off very slow with no points in the first three minutes by any team until Bruder hit a 3 with five minutes to go. From there however, an Amaya Capps three ball sparked a mini 8-4 run for the Eagles. It was all River from there however as they went on to cruise to a 62-34 win.
Game balls go to:
The Rocky River coaching staff for clinching another CWC Crown, this one outright. This staff works so hard and has built something special.
River reserve Regan Kane for showing some big time points off the bench.
Amaya Capps for constantly hustling on both ends of the court and playing with aggressive persistence.
Abby Quarles for keeping up the family tradition of making headlines at Kee on Sports!
