Grace DeWitt and Addie Tisler combined for 9 of the River Lady Pirates 15 goals in their 15-10 victory tonight over the visiting Avon Eagles. Liz Yezbak, Ellie Holton and Elle Mocho joined the party with 2 goals each as well.  The Avon Eagles were led by their sensational trio of the Schaefer sisters Ava and Ella along with perhaps one of the best players in the state, Ayla Perez as they combined to score 8 of their squads 10 goals while the dynamic Addison Atkins had the other two.  The game saw 25 total goals and if it wasn’t for the solid effort from Avon’s goalkeeper Grace Herbert and Rivers Claudia Walsh, there would have been even more with these two high flying attacks.

It took the Pirates no time at all to get the scoring going in the first when Elle Mocho connected with a one hopper past the left leg of the Avon goalkeeper. From there, an Addie Tisler penalty shot increased the lead to 2-0 Pirates, only a few minutes in.  It was then time for Elle Schaefer to get the Eagles back in it with a goal for Avon, cutting into the lead at 2-1 with 8:29 left to play  in the opening frame.  Less then 30 seconds after however, it was Addie Tisler scoring again, bumping the lead back out to 2 at 3-1 for the Lady Pirates.  Save after save by the Pirates Claudia Walsh kept it 3-1 Pirates for a bit.

Eagle Goalkeeper Grace Herbert did what she could to keep the Eagles in it but the relentless attack of the Pirates just kept coming, this time with another goal from Elle Mocho to increase the Pirate lead to 4-1 with 2:11 to play in the opening frame. The first quarter would go on to end by that same score with the Pirates in front.

After a Ellie Holton goal made it 5-1 to open the second, a beautiful give and go from behind then net led to a streaking down the middle launch from Addie Tisler that was like a rocket plummeting towards Earth as it pierced the net.  This flaming lemon made it 6-1 Pirates, putting them in firm control.  This gave Tisler the hat trick, only in the second quarter!

Avon battled back, taking advantage of back-to-back fouls from River, that led to a Addison Atkins free possession goal. Moments later it was a picture-perfect pass from Ayla Perez to Atkins off of a free passion that led to the Eagles next goal.  I’ll say it again, Perez set up Atkins perfectly to score on this one, and just like that, it was 6-3. Perez wasn’t done, and this time she took the shot from a free possession and made it, bringing the Eagles to within 2 at 6-4.

It was a masterful 3-minute stretch for Perez. Needing to stop the Avon rally, Grace Dewitt did so with a goal with 24 seconds left to play in the opening half.  This moved the River lead back to 3 at 7-4. They took that lead into the half.

It took Tisler less then 35 seconds to start the second half the same way did the first, with a goal!  It was Tisler’s fourth on the night. From there, Claudia Walsh continued to look strong with a pair of clutch Pirate saves, to keep it at 8-4. Following the saves, River set up shop in front of the Avon goal and ran a brilliant ball movement play where five different girls touched the Lemon before Emma Yezbak took a wicked cross body shot that landed in the net with force.  Advancing the score to 9-4 River with 7:26 left in the third.

Three straight goals b Avon’s terrific twosome Schaefer and Perez would cut it back to 9-7, however.  The run was stopped by River when Fulton connected again, pumping the River lead back out to 3 at 10-7 I the closing moments of the third. Yet another goal by Schaefer cut it back down to 10-8 as we headed towards the fourth.

After Avon finished the third on a 4-1 run, to cut a 5 goal River lead to just 2, the pressure was on the Pirates to respond strong in the fourth.  They did so early as Dewitt bounced off two Eagle defenders and spun around while keeping enough composure to sling a shot past Grace Herbert, improving the Pirate lead to 11-9, seconds into the fourth. Yesbak was next to join the party, scoring again for the Pirates and giving them a bit of breathing room. The Pirates went on to win 15-10.
