LAKEWOOD, OHIO — The St. Edward Eagles led by head coach Eric Flannery faced off against the Richmond Heights Spartans led by head coach Quentin Rogers tonight February 13th. The Spartans dominated in every aspect of the game, earning the win over the Eagles 82-64. The Spartans were led in scoring by senior guard Demaris Winters Jr. with 23 points and freshman guard Mekhi Ansberry with 18. The Eagles were led in scoring by junior forward Zymir Knox with 20 points and senior guard Drew Yurcich with 12.

Richmond Heights won the tip to start the game, and got off to a quick start offensively with a three-pointer from #11 Dorian Jones. The Spartans began to lay the wood on the boards, collecting another three from #12 Joey Emory. Halfway through the 1st quarter, the Spartans led the Eagles 10-2.

Nothing was really going for Ed’s, as the Spartans #2 Demaris Winters Jr. hit another three-pointer, extending the Spartan lead to 9 with just a minute to go. The score at the end of 1, Richmond Heights at 16 and St. Edward at 7.

To start the 2nd frame, #11 Zymir Knox of the Eagles hit a big and-1. Knox scored again to cut the lead to 4 as the Eagles continued to look for opportunities, but struggled rebounding. #5 Boden Grant came off the bench to give life to the Eagles with a monster putback.

The Spartans looked pretty impressive with just 3 minutes to go in the half, leading the Eagles by 10 points, helped by second chance buckets and superb ball movement. Your score at half saw Richmond Heights maintain their lead over St. Ed’s 32-21.

Starting out the 2nd half of action tonight, Emory of the Spartans and Knox of the Eagles traded buckets left and right. But, the Spartan defense clamped up thanks to Winters and Jones as the lead climbed to 16. This time, it was #1 DeErick Barbers Jr of the Spartans and #1 JT Kelsheimer of the Eagles trading threes.

The Eagles were totally disrupted offensively by stifling Spartan defense as threes continued to rain down on St. Eds. The lead was extended to 20 points thanks to threes from #0 Mekhi Ansberry and who else but Winters who at this stage of the game had 15 points for the Spartans alone. Ansberry was close behind with 13 points.

A HUGE alley-oop from Ansberry to Jones silenced the Ed’s crowd with 2 minutes left in the 3rd quarter. Knox got the crowd back in with a one-handed jam but a Barber and-1 for the Spartans was the perfect bounce back. End of 3rd quarter score: Richmond Heights 64 to St. Ed’s 45.

The mistakes continued to pile on for St. Ed’s at the beginning of the 4th quarter as they turned the ball over left and right. Richmond Heights poured it on Ed’s not calling off its proverbial dogs maintaining a 27-point lead with just 4 minutes to go in regulation.

The Spartans were just too much for the Eagles, who won the game 82-64!
