Reading Battles but Falls Late

The Reading Fightin Phils battled past an early deficit to tie the game but gave up two runs in the ninth inning and fell to the Binghamton Rumble Ponies 6-4 on Thursday.

Seven R-Phils tallied a hit in the contest. Vito Friscia came through with a two-RBI single in the bottom of the fifth inning. Logan O’Hoppe also batted in a run while Kevin Vicuna had an RBI single in his first game back after spending time on the injured list.

Binghamton scored a run in each of the first three innings to take an early lead. Reading loaded the bases twice within the first four innings but couldn’t push a runner across the plate.

After the Rumble Ponies added another run to their lead in the top of the fifth inning, the Fightins responded in the bottom half. Ali Castillo led off the inning with a single and advanced to second then third base due to a Binghamton wild pitch and a balk. Aldrem Corredor walked to put runners at the corners. Castillo scored the first run of the game for the R-Phils when O’Hoppe hit a single. Friscia batted in both Corredor and O’Hoppe with a two-RBI single, drawing the R-Phils within one.

The Fightins tied the game in the bottom of the seventh inning. Corredor stroked a single to left field and O’Hoppe reached first base on an error. Chris Sharpe walked to load the bases and Vicuna was hit by a pitch, which allowed Corredor to come home and knot the score at four.

Binghamton scored two runs to take the lead in the top of the ninth inning. Reading had one base runner with two outs in the bottom half of the ninth inning but couldn’t score.

Bubby Rossman was the starting pitcher for the Fightins. He went two innings and gave up two runs on two hits. Rossman struck out five batters.

Ethan Evanko relieved Rossman in the third inning. He pitched three innings and gave up two runs on two home runs. He finished with three strikeouts.
