Kent, OH– On September 2nd, the Roosevelt Rough Riders kicked off their third game of the season against their long time rival the Ravenna Ravens. This matchup was a big game for both teams as it defined their season, and is a great source of pride for the players, fans, coaches, and teachers. The overall win and loss record for both teams now stand at 54 wins for Ravenna and 51 wins for Kent, with three tied games.
The Rough Riders were restricted to 21 points while the Ravens amassed 42. Hundreds of fans supported their teams on the warm and sunny day. The Rough Riders now possess a 1-2 record and the Ravens stand at 2-1.
FIRST HALF
The Ravenna Ravens were able to get on the board quickly when Pavel Henderson scored a 10-yard touchdown. The Rough Rider’s freshman quarterback Yahntae Smith responded with a 49-yard touchdown. Ravenna’s MayKai O’Neal took the lead back a little later on.
The Rough Riders were able to put up more points when quarterback Matt McCann completed a pass to wide receiver Jon Jon Smith. The extra-point kick was good, tying up the score to 14-14 going into halftime.
SECOND HALF
The Ravens completely dominated the third quarter with two touchdowns in 55 seconds. The Rough Riders struggled as many of their players were getting hurt throughout the game. Ravens quarterback M’Kell Williams ran up the left side of the field and scored a 29-yard touchdown. The kick was completed by Mike Meyers, bringing the score to 21-14.
With under four minutes left in the game, the Rough Riders offense began to fall apart with quarterback Matt McCann fumbling the ball away. That led to another touchdown by running back Pavel Henderson and a completed kick by M’Kell Williams.
At 28 seconds, Raven’s wide receiver Maykai O’Neal intercepted the ball from the Rough Riders, leading to a 49-yard pick-six. The score by the end of the third quarter was 14-35, with the Ravens in the lead.
By the start of the fourth quarter, tension from Roosevelt players, coaches, and fans had risen. The game was momentarily paused when two student’s from Ravenna ran though Roosevelt’s track with their flag, angering a Rough rider coach and their student section.
The police escorted the students away and the game resumed a few minutes later. Roosevelt continued to struggle to keep up with the Ravens. Robert Meizer scored a touchdown for Ravenna with a completed kick from Mike Meyers. With 4:31 left in the quarter, quarterback Matt McCann scored the last touchdown of the night with a completed kick.
The Ravenna Ravens received the Big R Trophy sponsored by Brimfield Insurance Group. The Ravens will now travel to Cloverleaf next week. The Rough Riders will stay at home against Barberton.
