With Nick Chubb, David Bell and David Njoku all out of the Cleveland Browns lineup due to injury, it is hard to believe they would consider getting rid of another one of their top weapons on offense, but that looks exactly like what they are about to do by trading Amari Cooper to the Kansas City Chiefs.
The rumor coming out of Berea has the perennial all pro wideout being shipped to the two-time defending NFL Super Bowl Champions in exchange for their 2025 NFL Draft round 2 and round 3 picks. The Browns would send Cooper along with their fourth overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft.
The Kanas City Chiefs are in the market for a big play receiver after they lost Rashee Rice for the season yesterday in their win over the Los Angeles Chargers. In just 20 games with the Chiefs since being drafted in round 2 of the 2023 NFL draft out of SMU, he has 1,226 yards on 103 catches with 9 touchdowns.
Rice was a big reason Mahomes had a consistent big play target who could take the lid off the defense. The Chiefs still have All Pro Tight end Travis Kelce and rookie speedster Xavier Worthy, but clearly still need that other target to make things click for them. The need is now more than ever as the Chiefs lost their starting tailback Isiah Pacheco.
Cooper has been the best and most consistent threat on the Cleveland Browns since arriving in 2022. He has caught touchdown passes from Deshaun Watson, Jacoby Brissett and PJ Walker to Joe Flacco and DTR. Since arriving in 2022, he has 166 catches for 2,558 yards and 16 touchdowns as a Cleveland Brown. He has been the best threat the Browns have had, but he did most if not all of that damage with other quarterbacks. Sadly, Cooper and Watson have shown next to no chemistry at all.
Making matters worse, Cooper was apparently very upset the Browns didn’t offer him a long-term extension this offseason and he signed a one-year deal to come back, and end the holdout. He is also openly pouting on the field and has publicly questioned Watson in the offseason. Cooper, made it known how well he thought the offense ran with Joe Flacco, and that Flacco was born to run Stefanski’s offense.
Cooper is not happy and is going into business for himself by alligator arming passes and clearly not mentally confident in Watson. He wanted to be here long term, and the Browns wouldn’t give him the money or years he wanted. Meanwhile, the Chiefs are trying to win a third straight Super Bowl, and need a guy like Cooper to close the deal.
Don’t be shocked if by the time the Kansas Chiefs travel to Cleveland on Sunday December 15th, Amari Cooper is wearing Red and Yellow when he arrives at the Stadium. And no, I’m not talking about a Hulk Hogan T-Shirt.
