As we are fast approaching the end of the high school football season, here is the latest iteration of the Top 10 football teams in Portage County.
- Aurora (9-0) Aurora is best known for its defense, only giving up seven points to Revere in winning 48-7 over the Minutemen and clinching the Suburban League American Division. Sophomore quarterback Alex Moore threw four touchdowns, three of them to senior wide receiver Johnny Papesh, who also had an interception to aid the winning effort. This week: vs. Copley
- Streetsboro (9-0) The Rockets are off to their best start in school history and their offense continues to set the pace. In Friday night’s 49-10 win over Woodridge, junior wide receiver Chris Golson had a big night, catching four passes for 163 yards, and taking three of them to the end zone for touchdowns. This week, the Rockets look for their first ever 10-0 mark in school history. This week: vs. Akron Springfield
- Mogadore (8-1) The Wildcats took care of business last Friday night, defeating Southeast, 32-12, and clinching at least a share of the PTC County Division. A win Friday night against Crestwood would give them the division title outright.
- Garrettsville Garfield (8-1) With a close overtime win against Crestwood Friday night, not only did the G-Men clinch a playoff berth, they moved up to 2nd place in Division V, Region 17, according to JoeEitel.com. A win on Friday night will clinch a home game for the G-Men come Week 11. This week: vs. Valley Christian
- Ravenna (7-2) The Ravens defeated Springfield, 42-13, to remain in a tie for second in the PTC Metro Division. They remain in 9th place in Division III, Region 9, according to JoeEitel.com, and have a 26% chance of making the postseason, according to Fantastic50.net. They will need to win Friday night, and hope for some help along the way in order to play Week 11 for the first time since 2012. This week: vs. Woodridge
- Rootstown (7-2) The Rovers walloped Valley Christian, 63-0, and control their own destiny, sitting 5th in Division V, Region 17, according to JoeEitel.com. They are effectively in the playoffs regardless of the outcome, but a win to close out the season would give them slightly less than a 50/50 shot at a home game Week 11. This week: at Southeast
- Crestwood (6-3) The Red Devils suffered yet another heartbreaking loss, this time at home against Garrettsville Garfield, 21-20 in overtime. They are a long shot to qualify for the postseason, currently sitting 12th in Division V, Region 17, according to JoeEitel.com, and need a win on Friday night and a lot of breaks to go their way. This week: at Mogadore
- Kent Roosevelt (5-4) Despite a non-conference loss, 31-24, to Garfield Heights, the Rough Riders still have an outside shot to make it to the postseason, sitting 11th in Division II, Region 5, according to JoeEitel.com, and have a 9% chance at making it, according to Fantastic50.net. A win Friday night would not only thwart the playoff hopes of conference foe Barberton, but put themselves on the bubble to qualify, with the right amount of breaks going their way.
- Field (4-5) The Falcons are looking for their first .500 or better season since 2015, when they went 7-3. A win against Akron Coventry last Friday night kept them on the outer fringes of playoff contention, and another win at Norton this Friday night will increase their chances slightly, and if the Harbin points break their way, they will make their first playoff appearance since 2014.
- Southeast (4-5) The Pirates dropped a tough one to Mogadore last weekend, officially eliminating them from postseason contention. But a win against Garrettsville Garfield at home can give the Pirates a .500 finish.
