MANSFIELD, Ohio – The Pickerington Central Tigers defeated Magnificat today, 49-41 in an overtime thriller to advance to the Division I State Championship Game.  They overcame a 8 point halftime deficit and then a 2 point deficit with 8 seconds to play in regulation, for the remarkable win.

The Tigers were led by Zoe Coleman with 13 points while London Johnson tallied 12 and Blossom Walker scored 10.  The Blue Streaks were led in scoring by Reese Roggenburk with 17 while Julia Hall had 14 and Sofia scored 6.  The three seniors along with co-starter and defensive stopper Sophia LaPorte who scored two, saw their Blue Streak careers end today.

It looked for a moment that those two points from LaPorte would be the game winners for Magnificat when it put them ahead late in the fourth, but the scrappy Tigers simply wouldn’t quit.  This was evident as they began the third quarter trailing 23-15 at the break.  The Tigers poured on the full court press however to outscore the Blue Streaks 12-1 in the third, a quarter in which the Blue Streaks didn’t make a single field goal and piled up the turnovers and fouls.

The drama was just building however as the game continued to go back and forth until the Blue Streaks clung to a 37-35 lead with 8 seconds to go in the game.  The Tigers prowled right past their trap to score with 2.5 seconds left on the clock as Kennedy Gordon went coast to coast to tie the game and send it to overtime.

In the extra frame. Gabby Plair hit a three to get the Tigers going early, and they never looked back from there.

The Bottom line on this one is this.

The Blue Streaks used great foul shooting in the first quarter to build a 13-11 lead after one when Reese Roggenburk went 5 for 5 from the line.  In the second, it was the Blue Steak defense as they held the Tigers to just 4 points in those 8 minutes to build the halftime lead to 23-15.  The third quarter was 8 minutes of madness for Magnificat while both teams played like their season was on the line in the fourth.

Overtime was dominated by the Tigers with Julia Hall and Gemma Wichmann both fouled out. Speaking of fouls, Roggenburk took 9 foul shots in the first half and none in the second half.  The second half and overtime was dominated by the Tigers who outscored the Blue Streaks 34 to just 18 during that stretch.

The season for the Tigers goes on while the one of the Blue Streaks, meets a shocking end.
