** NOTE FROM CEO & FOUNDER OF KOS VINCE MCKEE**
High school football season is right around the corner, and once again, Avon Lake will be one of our featured schools covered on a weekly basis. We have over 6 million people a year who click on the website to read and watch our content. We are in need of sponsorships in order to continue for that coverage of Avon Lake Athletics to be free for readers and viewers. If not, our Avon Lake coverage will now be behind paywalls moving forward. Avon currently has six companies that sponsor us. Please contact Vince McKee at Vince.McKee@keeonsports.com if you know any small companies that could use our advertising help. We keep it extremely affordable to advertise. Thank you.
For the first time in 14 stops on the Summer Park Tour 2023 schedule, we found our way to Avon Lake when we visited Weiss Field. This was a mixed bag visit for us as the theme of the Playground was “Baseball” which we absolutely LOVED! However, it was not well kept up, and we saw some alarming things along the way that were just a bit concerning. Let’s hand out the grades!

Access to the park.
Grade – A
Easy to get to with plenty of room for parking. Not far at all from the Avon Commons and plenty of things to do in the area to make a day out of it.
Cleanliness
Grade – D
From shards of glass everywhere, to empty beer cans strown around, to no toilet paper in the bathrooms, it was a tough not to be a little turned off by all of that. Also, I noticed the pavilions were completely rusted over and the flooring of the playground was cracked, broken and had several large holes. Not sure why such a cool little playground has gotten so little attention in the way of maintenance.
Things to do at the park.
Grade – A
There are no shortages of things to do at this playground. They have everything from playgrounds and skate parks to volleyball nets and baseball fields. The photo gallery on page two really tells the story, but again, the baseball theme is just really cool and unique. Did I mention they even have a dog park there?
Also, make sure that no little ones get their tiny fingers stuck in the roller slide. My youngest daughter loved mastering all the monkey bars. The only thing missing was a swing set for big kids, as they only had one for tiny tots.
Places for parents to sit.
Grade A
There is plenty of room for parents to sit in the shade, and still keep an eye on their children.
Bathroom Situation
Grade – D
Well, as much as we appreciate the indoor plumbing at any playground, this one was simply disgusting. No toilet paper in the stalls for the women, and just extremely filthy.
Best part of the park.
The baseball theme is cool enough for a token visit.
Would we go back?
This is a tough one, because I feel like if the city put some money into cleaning up the playground area, the pavilions and even the skate park, they’d have a cannot miss park. It just feels like we visited a once great park, that has seen some rough times. One attraction, the round net thing, literally broke when my tiny daughter was on it while the volleyball court had weeds growing through it.

It is pretty crazy to think with everything you have done for Avon Lake student athletes over the years, this is how it all turns out in the end. I went to your signing at the Cleveland Flea last year, and I was amazed by how many people were lined up to get their book signed, but not a single one from Avon or Avon Lake. Just heartbreaking. The kids will forever remember what you did for them, I know mine does!
