PARK REVIEW: Clague Memorial Park in Westlake

Stop Five on the 2023 Summer Park Tour took us back to Westlake, and ironically enough, right across the street from our location of Park 3, and right down the street from the location of Park 2.  This time, while remaining on Clague Rd, we visited Clague Memorial Park, better known as, “The Park at Clague Playhouse”

It is by far one of the smallest parks on the tour, but still packs quite the punch.  Let’s get to the grades.

Access to the Park

Grade – B

Parking can be very limited if there are multiple games going on at once on the baseball diamonds.  Other than that, it is two minutes from I90 and very accessible.  It is also right behind the Clague Playhouse and mostly covered up by it, so it is hard to see from Clague Road unless you know to look for it.  However, it is very tiny, so if you blink, you will miss it.

Things to do

Grade – C

This to me, is the ideal park for parents of little league players who have younger siblings who want no part of sitting and watching the game, and the mother or babysitter is forced to entertain them somehow while the father obnoxiously tries to coach his child from the stands.  The park is about 50×50 square feet and very small.  Not much to do and if your child is pre-teenage years, or anywhere over the age of 7, they may get bored quickly.   There are no swings, and only two small slides.

The ring bridge in the middle, however, is actually pretty fun and the highlight of the playground, along with the rock wall and the snack stand.  Ah yes, the snack stand!  Fully loaded with goodies.

Places for parents to sit

Grade – A+

Allright folks, while the biggest drawback of this park is the size, at the same time, a huge plus for parents are the two benches you can sit on and relax as you barely have to move your neck to see everything at once. No little leaguer in his right mind is going to be able to hit a ball that far, so you don’t have to worry about getting hit by a stray ball either.  If you want to bring a book or scroll your phone and see what EVERYONE ELSE is doing with their day or evening, this bench and tiny gated in park is the place to do it.

Cleanliness

Grade A

I found this to be one of the nicer parks as far as cleanliness.  I didn’t see a trace of bird poop on anything.

Bathroom

Grade F

If there is no game going on, the bathrooms are locked and closed, leaving you in a world of hurt.

Best part of the park

The Snack Stand!  The prices are super cheap, and the menu is large.

I ordered a hot dog when I was there, a Hawaiin Punch and bags of chips for my daughters, and it was only $6.  Not only that, but the Hot Dog was fresh, cooked to perfection and super tasty.

Would I recommend?

Not really, but again, a nice fallback for parents who have multiple kids with one of them playing little league and a younger sibling with zero desire to sit still and watch.  This park may kill you one or two innings.
