Bedford Heights Stadium – Bedford Heights was scheduled to play Shaker Heights this week. Due to Covid-19 protocols for Shaker Heights, Bedford Heights needed a new opponent.
The new opponent found was the Padua Bruins.
The game started out slow until the Bearcats running picked up. Senior quarterback Raymell Hester scored the first touchdown on a keeper. The Bearcats followed up the TD with a successful two-point conversion (8-0 Bearcats).
Tempo picked up in the second quarter for both teams. After a three and out for the Bearcats, the punting unit suffered a misscue, resulting in a Padua safety (8-2 Bearcats).
The Bruins were driving down the field before coughing up the ball. The fumble gave Bedford Heights a momentum shift and Hester took advantage. Hester found sophomore Kamryn Bybee for a big time 81-yard TD (15-2 Bearcats).
The Bearcats were not done putting more points on the board before halftime. Hester threw another touchdown pass to senior Jaylon Clark that went for 57 yards.
Down 22-2, Padua still had 2:22 in the half to reduce the deficit. The Bruins went to the hurry up offense and with 40 seconds remaining, Bruins sophomore quarterback Tyler Tusai threw a touchdown pass to sophomore Freddie Borkey. Going into the locker room, Bedford Heights still held a commanding 22-8 advantage.
The Padua Bruins looked like a different team in the third quarter. The game changed when the Bruins recovered a blocked punt, setting up a first and goal. Sophomore Gio DiSiena ran it for a touchdown, cutting the Bearcats’ lead down to 22-15.
The Bruins defense and special teams unit continued to hold strong. Bedford Heights turned the ball over on downs and the game was fully swinging the way of Padua.
The Bruins got the ball back with 1:15 remaining in the fourth quarter. In spectacular form, junior Caden Fyock scored the go ahead touchdown giving the Bruins the lead with 59 seconds left in the game.
The Bruins win a nail biter 29-28.
Tyler Tusai is my player of the game.
