OPINION: The NHL Should Host A 16 Team Single Elimination Tournament

Rumor has it that the NHL may return just long enough for the playoffs.  Even without a crowd, the sports fans would go crazy for it.

My idea is a 16-team single elimination tournament over the course of one week.  That way it doesn’t back up the NHL draft or any other offseason activity. It would take place over the course of a week, and the higher seed would host each game.

What do you think?  Good idea or bad idea?  Let us know.  Here is a look at the first-round matchups as the seeding is based solely on current records and not conference.

1 vs 16

Boston vs Rangers

2 vs 15

STL vs Calgary

3 vs 14

Colorado vs Islanders

4 vs 13

Washington vs Columbus

5 vs 12

Philly vs Carolina

6 vs 11

Pittsburgh vs Winnipieg

7 vs 10

Las Vegas vs Toronto

8 vs 9

Edmonton vs Dallas

  1. Interesting but I don’t think the NHL Board of Governors would approve this. I could see best of 3 or best of 5 like the league has done in the past but not a single elimination tournament. Also the NHL Draft has been postponed so that wouldn’t be a concern, just free agency
